The Iranian man who inspired Tom Hanks' The Terminal: Mehran Karimi Nasseri, who has died after living in a Paris airport for 18 years, was a 'mini-celebrity' among passengers and nicknamed 'Lord Alfred' by staff before moving to a shelter

I had a solution in the 1990s, when I first read about Nasseri. I asked Peter Anderson, the Secretary General of the Conch Republic, to simply issue Nasseri a passport. At that time, people actually traveled on their Conch Republic passport. I used mine in the Bahamas and Austria. At one time, a Conch passport holder could get in and out of a dozen countries. The plan was simple -- fly Nasseri to Austria, which recognized us. Then to the Bahamas. And then sail him over to the US. And then let the US government sue us, again, for forming our own "country."

Anderson didn't believe Nasseri's story until after 2001, when 9/11 ended the usefulness of a Conch Republic passport.
