A recent announcement of a restaurant closing sparked some memories and I was wondering if any TUGGERS had similar experiences.

When non-smoking sections were first beginning to come in vogue, my wife and I went into one restaurant that had a sign indicating that they had a non-smoking section available. We asked to be seated there, but were taken to a table with an ash tray on it. When we told the hostess that we wanted non-smoking, she gave us a sneer, picked up the ash tray and moved it to the next table.

At another restaurant which said it had a non-smoking section, we were taken into a side room that was just blue with smoke with cigarettes lit up everywhere. There were three tables against one wall which were non-smoking, that was it. We would have been much better off seated in the main dining room which was more open and had better ventilation.

It never made sense in any shared-air situation to declare part of it non-smoking. Sure, none of that air will dare make its way to this area! Snitty waitress, it seems! I will guess that you were not the first seeking non-smoking section. Oh, the next table is smoking, and this one is non-smoking? Sure. No obvious problems with that...

There was significant hubbub some years back when our city suddenly went to no indoor smoking. We lost many restaurants and bars that took their business to other state that would let them run the business they wanted to run.

One of my memories of the early days of nonsmoking sections was on a nearly full airplane flight. I had requested a seat in the non-smoking section so was annoyed to find when I got to my seat that I had instead been placed in the smoking section. I stopped the flight attendant to ask to be reseated, but there wasn't a seat available in the nosmoking section. The result: the entire flight became nonsmoking! I'm sure most of the smokers on the plane weren't happy but it was for me one of the more pleasant flights I'd ever had at the time!

It was ironic given the small size of airplane cabins that they even tried to do smoking/nonsmoking sections. It took only a few minutes for the smoke to permeate the entire airplane anyway.
