I don't even know what to think about the changes. I've only flown Southwest for the last couple years thanks to lots of points and a Companion Pass. Also, the airport that serves Southwest is closer to my house than the big airport with every possible airline. I'm hoping to get a Companion Pass again for 2025, but after that, I'll need to reconsider where I collect points.

Got an email.

We will begin selling flights with seat assignments in the second half of 2025 for travel in the first half of 2026.

Now they need to get a credit card that automatically gives A-List status.

If they don't have an easy way to get status, I will have to move toward United and that credit card. I have considered it in the past, but this is making me re-think Southwest because status is something I cannot achieve easily with any airline. United has a big presence in Denver. Their credit card includes a free bag and always assigned seats. The lounge adds to that value. Rick will be on board with the idea. We have a lot of United points built up.

I am going to use my points and travel funds before 2026. I don't want to be stuck with points in a system that I cannot use after the changes. I never minded the "cattle call."

I guess you will fewer miracles in 2026. No more disabled passengers able to walk off of the plane.
Oh I imagine they will still offer preboarding.

I don't think there is any way in the world they start offering a card that just gives A-List status as a benefit.

The top cards now allow you to earn TQPs toward A-List at a rate of 1500/$5k in spend. Of course to get the 35,000 TQPs required for A-List solely from credit card spend that amounts to $120,000 in spend annually on the card.

Yeah but what would be the advantage of getting on early with assigned seats?
Overhead bin space.

Sure SWA’s offers free checked bags. We travel light with only carry on luggage, so early boarding helps secure the necessary overhead space.

This would be a horrible idea. Though it might help them generate revenue. Easy high level access to elite tiers in the airline programs has pretty much ruined most airline programs and lounges.

Agreed. As much as I grumble about Delta tightening up the rules for (a) qualifying for elite status and (b) lounge access, both were sorely needed.

When everyone's super, no one will be.

Not having to wait in line. Assured of overhead bin space. And if you are mobility challenged, not having to stand and walk.
