When my wife and I were in Paris about two weeks ago, we saw cranes around the Arc de Triomphe. We thought that they might be refurbishing it, but were told that the were preparing to wrap in fabric as part of an art project. Apparently this was one of Christo's creations. Here is a story on the project. If you watch the video, you can see the Arc fully wrapped.

I've seen photos of several of Christo's large-scale art projects. I have generally enjoyed them and even marvelled at some. This one was planned before his death last year. Many of his projects were controversial, but this one somehow bothers me as being a bit disrespectful.

The tomb of France's Unknown Soldier lies at the base of the Arc de Triomphe. Christo did not die in the service of France, nor his adopted USA. As far as I know he never served...period. There are many other monuments in Paris they could have chosen to wrap instead. He already did the Pont du Neuf while he was alive.

To me it's like wrapping the National Cenotaph in Ottawa, or the monument that marks the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, just because some famous Hollywood entertainer thinks it's a good idea. As an air force brat and the son and grandson of veterans, even if the finished project looks great, somehow it just seems wrong. I don't know why this bothers me, but for some reason it does.

Its over. I'm tempted to say "This wraps it up" as an anti-pun since it is an unwrapping.

I wouldn't have bothered posting this link if it hadn't been for the video in the middle of the story. I was particularly interested in seeing the brief shots of two other monuments that Christo had wrapped up. You can skip to about the 50 second mark in the video if you want to see just those two pictures.

My UCLA roommate was an art major, followed by a year in their architecture program. She was a big Cristo fan and I remember her going to some installation here in California in the late 70s early 80s, and coming back with a scrap of the fabric. I never saw the point.
