Back in the 1980's when stationed in Germany. My wife, very young son, SIL, and I took an evening canal tour in Amsterdam. As people boarded the boat the Guide asked if you spoke Dutch or English as he was going to give the Commentary rather than use the multi-language tape. If you did not speak Dutch or English he directed you to one of the other boats. All the boats launched about the same time. At one point all the other boats made a left turn but we made a right turn. We got a tour of the Red Light District included.

We took the Blue Boat company (#17 on the list) last fall because they were the only ones who had a boat with a small elevator type platform on it so my 90 yr old dad could get on the boat with his walker. They even had a ramp to get down to the dock from the street level. My niece booked a Rotterdam harbour cruise for us and was told they had a ramp. They did have a ramp to get to the edge of the boat, then there were 4 narrow steps to get into the boat! Luckily there were 2 big muscular employees who practically lifted dad down into the boat then back up when the cruise was over.

Our Amsterdam canal cruise was on a small boat for 12 of us gathered via a Cruise Critic roll call. The previous boaters had a party aboard and left food and beer that we got to enjoy. Being a small boat we cruised small canals that the tour boats cannot navigate. The only downside is that there wasn’t a deck so the scenery could only be seen from inside the boat.
