I think the biggest issue is using the same password for many sites - even if unusual password. I do use the same password for many sites - but only for sites where I don't care if I would be hacked.

I mean if someone hacks my TUG account - big deal. Or my pizza hut account, etc. For things like bank accounts or other important sites I use a unique password.

so many websites now have complexity rules, I do kind of wonder if these simple passwords are in fact the most common.. unless they are just on accounts like Joestein mentioned, throwaway accounts...

This exactly. If a password is compromised on one site hackers will try it across multiple sites. It doesn't matter if it is hard or easy. I had a MyPoints account compromised this way. They got access to my Yahoo mail via the Yahoo data breach. When they looked at my emails, they saw MyPoints emails. Then they used the email and same password for MyPoints and redeemed all the points for Amazon gift cards. I closed down my MyPoints account after that and only those throwaway accounts might use the same password. Though I do have a unique one for TUG and I try to update the passwords for others as I come across them.

In the past, I came up with passwords that I can remember but end up forgetting only to be forced to create another password that I can remember. I came up with a solution that seems to work for me.

TFDR; was "3.1415926X" in there? Don't want to re-use? change the "X" to any letter, say the 2nd letter in the URL of the site.

I've started to notice a lot of apps are going to no passwords. You use your email address and it sends you a code you have to enter. I notice this mainly with restaurant and retail apps. These seem to be pretty low risk, but it does create a single point of failure. If your email is compromised, the scammers have access to a lot of apps where they can perhaps place orders with stored credit cards.

The first 8 digits of PI with an x is a good one. Easy to remember. Moving the x is a good idea too. Never thought of that.

I remember when someone hacked an account of a middle east dictator, Assad of Syria if memory serves, and it turned out his password was "password".
