I'm not sure if it's nationwide, but in San Diego county, Tesla is doing demo days. I signed up at one of the north county locations and first drove a Model 3 AWD which was great and we might eventually lease one. Then they asked if I wanted to take the Cyber truck for a spin. Holy Cow! Nothing that big should go that fast. I was laughing the whole time I was driving it.

We've got way too many cars right now for two people so I will need to sell a few things first. Goodbye V8 BMW M3 (sniff). The Mazda CX5 will have to go also.

Quicker off the line. My BMW is manual transmission and 15 years old. On a road course the BMW smokes it in the corners. Electric cars are heavy and the suspension isn’t as well damped as the BMW. Just total opposites. Modern vs. angry old school.

Are these priced differently in each area ? When I looked at the plaid it was a Model s for over $75,000.

Model 3 and Y you can get in the 40s. Plaid model? No way. I like the model 3 Performance but it’s about 12 grand more than the LR AWD and that’s fast enough. My wife will mainly be running errands with it.

We have a friend who is being scammed by someone saying he is Elon Musk and he won a Tesla that will be delivered this week He said he talked to Musk on the phone, when he congratulated him on winning the car and $50,000. We told him it was probably a scam, his wife is sure it is, and we warned for him not to send money.

He is our age, 70, and he is maybe starting to show signs of dementia. I am very concerned about him. He has friended a lot of different Elon Musk wannabes on FB. It's unbelievable that he would fall for this. Rick asked if he entered a contest. "I think so."

I was looking at new through Tesla. I see you are right about the price. A model y long rang awd is showing up at $31,000 + other charges I haven't looked into. I think it's new but there is no year of manufacture on the add.

used...not new. saw two under 50k offered in the marketplace recently!

that is an absurd amount of car for under 50k, had they been priced this low when i was shopping id likely have gone with one vs the lightning even though its way less practical

The practicality is our problem too. The next vehicle we buy will be replacing a Ridgeline AWD used to haul garbage bags and other medium sized items or a Lexus. I'm not a fan of the Lexus big grill but my wife likes the RX 350 and it will pull my boat which might not even matter as I didn't even use it last year.

friends absolutely love the model Y seems to have a fairly roomy hatch area?

im really surprised noone has made much effort to produce a compact or midsize pickup truck for the ev market vs going the other direction making them larger and more expensive.

give me a ford ranger or chevy colorado with 200 miles of range and i think it would sell like hotcakes.

You forget that most people buy pick-ups now for the image, so they don't feel as cool (maybe not as good compensation for something?) when it's not bigger than the truck next to them. There are some of us who actually tow stuff, but then you want the towing capacity of a larger truck. Otherwise the mass market is all SUV styling IMO, even if compact like the Crosstrek.

And the problem is if you use an electric truck like a truck, the battery fades quickly.

towing kills the range for sure, though for me i use the bed far more than I tow a trailer and have never seen any difference in range in that regard.

I mean, our F250 and 1500 also use gas quick - or do you mean the whole battery dies quickly such that you can't recharge it?

I like an old Diesel engine for pulling heavy loads. The problem with diesel engines is they have over complicated them.

Any truck is going to use more fuel when loaded but the electric trucks usage is dramatic.

Unless you are on the actual Tesla website it’s not new. Tesla’s can only be purchased new directly from Tesla via the mobile app or via the website. It is a direct to consumer sale model only. Tesla does not advertise either - so what you’re referring to is not a new vehicle from what I can gather - feel free to share the link.

Currently the only midsized EV pickup model out there is the Rivian R1T, but it’s kinda pricey. You can get used launch edition R1Ts down into the 40k price range though. Others will be coming to market in the next couple of years. I’ve got reservations on the Rivian R2, RAM REV 1500, and Tesla Cybertruck at present. I wish Rivian would have announced an R2T pickup but alas right now it’s only the SUV. I’ve driven the Cybertruck twice now and apart from the polarizing looks I like the way it drives and the four wheel steering makes for a pretty agile full sized truck, but again it’s pricey for what you get IMHO. I agree it’d be nice to see more mid-sized EV pickups come to market. I don’t really need a full sized pickup any longer but still have mine because it’s paid off with low miles and not used much these days.

We love our Tesla MY LR - great storage space. We take most of our road trips using the MY these days. We take our weekend trips and have enough storage space in the rear just using the rear storage well and the hatch area. With the rear seats folded down the storage is cavernous. When we take our two week vacation to Myrtle Beach each year - we fold the seats down and have enough room to take all of our luggage, coolers, bags, and beach equipment (umbrella and chairs), with a bit of room to spare.

Yeah it’s not the weight that cuts range - it’s the aerodynamic hit when towing that kills range. Loading up the bed won’t impact range much at all in comparison.

It just consumes the available power in the pack more quickly. Figure 30-50% of normal range depending on what you are towing. The issue with EV pickups is that they are heavy and not very aerodynamic in the first place - so range isn’t great - typically 250-300 miles advertised. Cut that in half to 125-150 when towing on average. Then figure you aren’t going to recharge to 100% when taking road trips over longer distances - only to 80% - now that range goes to 100-125 miles between charges.

My 2018 RAM 1500 with the 33 gallon tank can go 600 miles on highway trips. Cut that in half for towing to 300 miles - still almost 3x what I could do in most EV pickups. Diesel pickups will do even better.

GM gets around this by using huge battery packs in their high end EV pickups - some 225kw gross (209kw useable) which means these pickups tip the scales at 9k lbs, but at least they get 460 miles EPA rated, or roughly 230 miles towing (YMMV) between charging sessions, or roughly double what the other EV pickups can get when towing.

I think these are used but have no clue as to how old they are. I had one pulled up but I'm not sure which one it was. Here are the the choices for my area I guess.

towing cuts the range of mine in half easily.

can still be recharged fine, just half the mileage.
