Tesla Inc. balks at recalling about 159,000 vehicles with potentially defective touch screens
By TOM KRISHER AP Auto Writer - January 13, 2021, 8:28 PM

DETROIT -- Tesla Inc. is balking at recalling about 159,000 vehicles with potentially defective touch screens, so U.S. safety regulators are moving to force the company to take action. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Wednesday sent a letter to Tesla saying it has tentatively determined that the screens are defective and pose a safety risk because they can cause backup cameras to go dark and defrosters to malfunction.

The agency wouldn't comment beyond the letter, which is a rare step toward a public hearing and eventual legal action. Experts say the letter means that Tesla has resisted doing a recall that NHTSA feels is necessary. “It's obvious to me that Tesla told NHTSA to go pound sand, so what they're about to get, they've earned it,” said Frank Borris, a former head of the agency's Office of Defects Investigation who now runs a safety consulting business.

Touch screen problems lead to recall. Wonder if this will be a common problem with all car touch screens.

Cheers

I remember reading about one jurisdiction that said the Tesla Touch Screen is a driving distraction same as cellular telephones.

That's the downside of Tesla, they don't have the maintenance infrastructure to deal with a major recall.

Reminds me of the Buick Reatta, from back in the 1990 time frame. The car had a very high tech video display in the dash for the time, and was quickly claimed to be a high tech nightmare.

Mainly because Tesla has been fighting to get around franchise laws as it relates to car dealerships.

Why would that be unique to Tesla? Almost all new cars today have a touch screen display.

The part that I found interesting is the "planned obsolescence". We are starting to look at something to replace my Mini (which I love but I want something with a less stiff ride for the future) but I don't want to put a ton of money into a car and "planned obsolescence" in any product is a non-starter for me.
