No technical background but I have a customer in need of online content. On the other hand I have a company that can provide that content.

I believe the ideal thing would be to have my own platform but that will take time and expense. If I am 100% trusting of the supplier is there any downside to letting the supplier integrate with my customer? In any event what are the implications of such an arrangement?

You haven't given enough info about what the situation is for anyone to give you any advice let alone good advice.

Servers = hardware. Different regulations for different locations. Servers on the Isle of Man will have different laws than servers in San Diego, Ca. Various different types. You always want good backup procedures and generally you want your servers somewhere safe that no one can easily mess with (including the government).

Platforms = from what you're talking about I'm guessing you're referring to software installed on servers. There are all different kinds. Many makers/sellers of platforms also offer hosting on servers. Examples: wordpress, squarespace, weebly. You don't need a platform to make a website (you can just code it) but a platform may be easier to manage/update/DIY.

Online Content = articles, forums, reviews, etc. This stuff can be crowdsourced (like how TUG does it) or can be written by the company or it can be bought.
