Several couple of weeks ago I signed up for Target Circle. I go to Target a lot. The program is still new to the employees so nobody really knows much about it. An employee thought you would get 1% in addition to the 5% you get off with every purchase using your Redcard (Target credit card). For those of you who frequent Target I found this information:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2019/10/08/how-target-circle-savings-program-works/3900265002/

“With the free program, shoppers will earn 1% on every purchase to redeem on a future Target trip...However, shoppers with a Target RedCard aren’t eligible to earn 1% when they pay with the store-branded card but will continue to get 5% off purchases and can take advantage of the other Target Circle perks.”

Target seems lost.
For all of the vitriol they expended toward Wal Mart, Target would have been much better served improving their stores for the benefit of the customer (and, by extension, their own bottom line). It seems so long ago when Target used to carry some decent lines of clothing - those days are gone.
5% off most of Target's prices is still very easy to beat at other retail outlets and Target's venture into groceries does not seem to be going so well either.
Target's efforts with their store card and co branded credit cards are woefully behind in the marketplace as well. For example, I've had a Target account for many years - one that started with the store level Red Card and eventually morphed to a Visa card. That Visa card has NO side benefits (no rewards, no cash balance transfer offers - nothing) and is so far behind its current competitors that I placed the card in my safe storage at home - it never gets used because many other cards offer more rewards.
Unless they get back to business, the future does not look bright for Target.

Also, @jehb2 your link does not appear to be to the story on Target. It leads to a Bed, Bath and Beyond story...

I don't think it is just Target. Much of traditional retail is in trouble. The only thing that seems to be thriving these days are outlet malls. However that's dis-intermediating traditional retailers because these are corporate owned outlet stores.

I don't frequent Target much now that my kids are older, however I was in there recently and they do carry a lot of stuff you need. I just bought the gift cards at 10% off knowing that they make great gifts and will use the rest.
