Taking Medicine or Vitamins with me

I was thinking of putting all my vitamins and medicine in one container (I can tell the difference) - a couple of the pills are prescription (so I can use the prescription bottle) but has anyone had a problem taking these items. I was going to carry them in my purse.

I do NOT want a problem but taking 6 or 7 bottles for a week seems excessive since I'm trying to only have one carry on and personal item!

I have never experienced a problem taking a mixed bottle of OTC meds. I do put them in a carry-on, but that might be due to my not carrying a purse. :) The worst that could happen would be losing them to a (very unlikely) detailed inspection- which I've had happen with no consequences.

IF you have any controlled medication in your possessions, I'd carry a copy of the script with you. Transporting controlled medication without Rx (bottle or script with ID etc...) could be illegal or get your meds taken. This is especially true for schedule II/III meds. Coming back into the US with a large quantity of medication (more than your travel time) is also a flag. (CBP guidance below)

Can I travel with medications and medical devices, such as needles or oxygen tanks?

Prescription medications should be in their original containers with the doctor's prescription printed on the container. It is advised that you travel with no more than personal use quantities, a rule of thumb is no more than a 90 day supply. If your medications or devices are not in their original containers, you must have a copy of your prescription with you or a letter from your doctor. A valid prescription or doctors note is required on all medication entering the U.S.

This is how we travel. All prescriptions are in their proper container. They actually looked at my pills at PVR by opening the containers on one trip.

I also recommends the above advice. Remember you could run into an Inspector Tracey who just dislike all Americans and could accuse you of illegal drugs possessions. . Be safe and follow the above suggestion.

A few years ago we pressed the button and got the "red" light. No worries. We gave officials our bags for inspection.

I brought some Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) with me (recovering from a cold). While a prescription isn't needed in the US, it is most definitely a prescription drug in Mexico! For about 45 minutes, they asked me about what I was doing with it, why I brought the number of pills in I did, where was my prescription, etc.

After 45 or so minutes, I ended up signing some form (in Spanish), and leaving my Sudafed. I'm guessing I probably agreed to donate my organs after I'm dead, haha!

Long story short, be careful about what you bring into Mexico!

Back from Mexico

Well I brought all my medicines in their original prescription bottles in my carry on. No one looked at them.
I guess I could have been unlucky and been checked somewhere along the process but I wasn't (which was really good.....because I have a lot of anxiety and I probably would have just started crying).

We had a wonderful week.....a couple of days at the Royal Islander (we got a great free breakfast with our reservation), down to Playa del Carmen for a night and then to Akumal for a couple days before returning to the Islander (where we got an ocean front room!) for our last night.

Can't wait to go back!!

Side-track to this message -- Can I ask where you stayed while in Akumal and was it all-inclusive?
