Most enjoyable drive of my life was from Bay Area to Santa Barbara, taking 1. We stopped and lunched in a fabulous seaside restaurant, and I wish I could remember the name of the restaurant or even its location. I have driven 5 as well, and would advise anyone interested in getting from SFO to LAX to take the extra time to drive 1 instead.

If ever there was a reason to rent a convertible, this is it. We've driven it several times from Ventura/Santa Barbara to above Monterey. Too many people, but still a wonderful drive.

It could have been Nepenthe's in Big Sur? Once you leave Carmel there's not a lot of restaurants along the coast until you get to Avila Beach (below San Luis Obispo). About 6 miles north of San Simeon (Hearst Castle) there is Seal Beach. It's just a little pull out pretty close to the Piedras Blancas lighthouse - I don't know about the seasons but we always stop to see seals and seal lions frolicking on the tiny strip of coast. You can (safely) observe them from an elevated trail....

Beautiful Drive

We just completed the drive a couple of days ago. Wow! Amazing beauty. We did eat at Nepenthe's in Big Sur. Great stop. Highly recommended.
