We will be at Lake Tahoe for a week starting December 31. It will be dh and I, and our ds 19 and ds 21. Wondering what we can do besides ski and snowboard since snow conditions do not look to be that great. (Tuggers pray for snow!) We will have a rental car. We have never been to Tahoe and will be staying at The Ridge Tahoe. I would love to take a tour to Yosemite but it looks like those are not offered in January. Could we go on our own? I would really appreciate suggestions!

Also wondering what we should do New Years Eve?? We will actually be staying in Stateline that night. Not into the gambling....at all.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

The Tahoe ski hills are making snow so there will be a decent number of runs for you at Heavenly. Apart from gambling, the big hotels have concert venues and nightclubs so there will be things going on in the evening besides gambling.

At this time of the year, at the base of Heavenly gondola, there are apres-ski outdoor concerts, outdoor ice skating and there is a multiplex theatre located there as well.

Driving from South Lake Tahoe to Yosemite is not possible in winter. One must travel through Ebett's Pass which is closed all winter long. This is only a possible route in the summer.

You can take a nice drive into the Carson Valley and see a bit of history there. Also, are some very nice hot springs close by in Genoa and Markleville. The drive around Lake Tahoe is very scenic and the ever popular Tahoe Queen lake cruise operates throughout the winter. I don't think you'll have much trouble at all filling your time even if the skiing is not the greatest.

We spend a couple of weeks a year in Tahoe and we always enjoy a day trip to Virginia City. With the absence of snow it will be an easy drive.

You may be able to do Yosemite (via 88 and 49 i.e. 5 hours each way) if you can plan on a 2-day trip with a stay in Angels Camp or Jamestown (http://www.jamestown-ca.com/) which is a little over halfway on that route. No restrictions on 88 and 49 according to California DOT: http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi. Also see this Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/YosemiteNPS.
Another option is San Francisco with a stop in Sacramento.

Thanks everyone! We leave tonight and there is still no snow in the forecast......still very excited!! I think there will be plenty of things to do and if we have down time I have picked up 3 books from the library to read. Nothing wrong with that!

We have visited two excellent museums in Carson City. One is a minor's museum, the other old cars. Both very interesting
