Looking to book a summer trip to Tahoe with DC points: undecided as to exact date (thinking July/Aug'12), whether we'd like a week or less (hence why currently unbooked), and how big a unit (2bd vs 3bd).

From what I can tell both properties are in the same location, at Gondola base...is this correct? What are the benefits of going with Grand, besides the 'fancy' factor?

Finally, looking at the DC chart I'm confused as to the notation of 2bdrm-for-1 vs 2bdrm-for-2: any insight?

Thanks-
Eileen

I am no expert, but we just returned from a trip to Timber Lodge last week. It was a lovely place to stay. As I walked past the Grand Residence in the Heavenly Village the only thing I noticed was that the pool looked smaller than the Timber Lodge. Someone else can chime in on the actual residences.

Make sure you get up to Sand Harbor State Park on the east side one day during your stay for water activities and scenic relaxation. We loved this trip and want to return for a winter stay.

There is a washer and dryer in each Timber Lodge unit, GR has guest laundry rooms in designated hallways.

I have stayed at both properties and both are very nice. Grand units are slightly larger. The other difference is that Timber Lodge provides valet parking ( no self parking at either) and Grand Resisdence charges $24 per day. You will not be disappointed with either property.

From what I can tell both properties are in the same location, at Gondola base...is this correct?

I have attached a picture that was taken from the pool area of Timberlodge. If you look close you can see the gondola just about in the middle of the picture. The roof of Marriott Residence can be seen in the background.

And if you follow the below link (my quota for attachments in TUG is close to maxed) you can see us walking out the gate of Timberlodge, under the cables of the gondola. The buildings we are heading toward is a combination of the Residence and the shops underneath.

In the Tiimberlodge complex, except for the Fire and Ice restaurant, there are no shops or other businesses. But the ground level of the Residence is like a smalll strip mall with lots of shops and restaurants...and an ice skating rink (or mini golf course depending on the season) in the large open area in the middle.

Thank you!

Thanks to all for the input.

It's been about 4yrs since we've been to Tahoe- and all our previous stays have been at family/friends' homes in the area. This will be our first condo/hotel stay, and our first bringing the kids (ages 6/3/0)!

We've been to the Fire/Ice restaurant, so the references to such have helped me get my bearings :)

Now I guess I'll just have to see what's available through the DC for the dates we'd like... I'm leaning towards the Timberlodge mainly for the reduced points requirements- I'll update when things are booked.

We just returned from a week at the Grand Residence Club in Lake Tahoe at the end of August. Both properties are in an ideal location – right in the middle of things. Timber Lodge is a much bigger property, therefore the pool is bigger and a lot busier than the one at the Grand. We noticed a lot more families with small children at Timber Lodge. The service at the Grand was beyond excellent. Yes, the parking is expensive but the valets were fantastic! Not only would they quickly get your car, but they would wash the windshield and open doors, etc. The concierges, Rob & Connie were extremely helpful & knew what they were talking about. Everyone else there went out of their way to be helpful.

We travel with another couple & our unit was quite large with fireplaces both in the master bedroom & the common living area. These came in handy because the daytime temperatures were in the 80’s, sunny & beautiful but it went down to the low to middle 40’s at night. I think I read somewhere that not all Timber Lodge units have balconies. Some of the units at the Grand Residence have wooden balconies but we had a very large cement porch which overlooked the main street in Heavenly Village.

There is so much to do in that area. Here are some of the things that we really enjoyed: A cruise around the lake on Safari Rose – an 80 foot yacht once owned by the 3M Company. It was a 4 hour cruise with lunch included & grilled on board. Another day we took the old steam train – Engine #18 – the one featured in the movie Water For Elephants – from Carson City to Virginia City – an old mining town. If you choose to do this, the best place for lunch is the Bonanza Cafe. And also, once there, you should ride in an old authentic stage coach pulled by 4 draft horses. It was a short ride but long enough! Truckee is another old town that takes you back in time to the Old West. Squeeze Inn would be the place for lunch. And, if you’re able to hike over a mile almost straight down & then again straight up, you should take a guided tour of Vikingsholm Castle. This place was built by a very wealthy lady who thought that Emerald Bay reminded her of the Norwegian Fjords. Very interesting & well worth the climb. And, lastly, you will of course want to ride the gondola for a beautiful view of the lake.

For breakfast the Driftwood Café is just a short walk out the front door of the Grand & our other favorite was the Red Hut. There are a couple of these but we went to the newer one just a short drive down the road. This one is decorated with 50’s memorabilia & even has an old fashioned soda fountain.

Whichever place you choose you will love Lake Tahoe. We sure did.
