Norway and Denmark have snubbed Sweden by opening their borders to each other but not to their Scandinavian neighbour because of its controversial no-lockdown coronavirus strategy.

Denmark said on Friday that it would open its borders from June 15 to Norwegian, German and Icelandic tourists while Norway said it would do so for Danish visitors.

Norwegian, German and Icelandic tourists coming to Denmark will have to show they have booked at least six nights in the country and will not be able to stay overnight in Copenhagen.

But the Norwegian and Danish prime ministers said they would not open up to Swedish visitors because of its high Covid-19 infection rate.

Yes the great Swedish experiment has been a deadly flop. As of a few days ago, if Sweden had the same population as the US they would have over 130,000 deaths. And they don't have the international travelers that New York does. It,s very sad. Initially Boris Johnson wanted to try that model in GB, but did back off. A little late, but better than Sweden.

It certainly appears so. Quite sad to see it, since there was some hope it would succeed, especially from a few TUG members who posted repeatedly about it. We all know now that Sweden wasn’t legally able to force a closure in peacetime so I suspect they simply tried to spin it as best as they could while encouraging people to keep social distance, etc.

A similar result could still happen elsewhere if people aren’t careful.

I never thought we would see the day when Sweden proved to be a more libertarian democracy than the good ole' USA. Sadly, that is where we are today.

Sweden is simply a couple of months ahead of countries that shut-down and are now trying to re-open. Countries and US states that are re-opening will get to where Sweden is unless a vaccine magically appears within the next 6 months, because at this point there are only two options -- herd immunity or vaccine. Sweden is much further down the path to herd immunity (and the casualties reflect this), but any country (including Norway or Denmark) and any US state choosing to re-open will have to face the path that Sweden is much further along, or remain closed until a vaccine is developed (Hawaii), or face rolling shutdowns after the virus spreads again with the re-openings.

I hate to say this, especially since I am Swedish --- but there is an upside of this. Let us know it wasn't the best plan.

A socialist welfare state with a higher coronavirus death rate than the US ... indeed so sad :(
But the Swedes could eat in restaurants ....... with "collective" social distancing
and with universal health care they didn't have worry about virus hospital bills !

Oh good gravy yet another inflammatory headline without truth.
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/. You can rearrange the tallies by column headings

For "daily death rate" the reference you cite says "new deaths," Sweden (45), population 10 million

The countries in the reference you cite with more "new deaths" than Sweden have larger populations
Mexico (371) population 129 miliion
Russia (181) population 146 million
Pakistan (78), population 220 million
Iran (57), population 84 million
Indonesia (53), population 273 million

Among U.S. states, again using the reference you cite, only Maryland has worse "new death" numbers compared to Sweden. Maryland's new death number is (43), population 6 million.

7-day numbers I think are statistically more significant than daily reports
In the past 7 days, Sweden is +3,925 in death count which is +12% of its death number
Countries with significant 7-day death number increases greater than Sweden's on a percentage basis are Brazil, Mexico, India, Indonesia, and Russia

On a 7-day basis, Virginia is +239 deaths and Rhode Island is +121 deaths, each being +18% of their respective death numbers.

A lot of people are rooting for Sweden to fail. There is no easy answer about the Covid 19 restrictions and what is the best approach. If anyone thinks the riots in the last few days are in no way related to the high unemployment and the fact that more and more people are getting desperate we are kidding ourselves.
I doubt that anyone is truly rooting for Sweden, or any other country, to fail.

The article is talking about the "daily death rate". The numbers you posted are "total deaths" per million. Those are two completely different things. With that being said, I think a better comparison would be with Sweden's Nordic neighbors;

Deaths/Million per worldometers

435 Sweden
99 Denmark
57 Findland
44 Norway

A number of posts have been deleted from this thread:

1) The Protests Topic is clearly a socially contentious topic, which is not appropriate for TUG.
2) Very sneaky the way you inserted it into this thread.

I understand the protests are a sensitive topic but I am not sure why the concept that unemployment leads to other problems is so taboo. We did not discuss whether the protests were right or wrong and I do not think anyone had that intention.

one can read between the lines

Simply absurd to call out those who post negative news that they are hoping for such failures. If you can no longer defend Sweden’s results, you shouldn’t try to deflect from the issue by blaming the messenger. /smh

Yellowfin -
1) Clearly not an appropriate topic for TUG
2) Some of the posters had already posted inappropriate opinions.
3) I'm not going to debate it.
