Marriott Vacation Club has a lot of Hilton Head locations, as well as in Orlando and other locations you may want to trade into on occasion. I would suggest buying a week, rather than points, (resale of course) at one of their HHI locations. Just make sure the season you purchase corresponds with when you would most likely vacation there with the kids. You can check the TUG Marketplace or Redweek for listings of Marriott as well as other systems.

As a follow up, within MVC, to trade into other locations (or even at your home resort if you want to go outside of your home season) you will need to open an Interval International account. Since the week would not be enrolled in Abound (you can do so at certain times but it ends up being quite expensive), you would have to pay the II annual membership fee yourself. Normally trades are $229 but if you trade into another MVC resort, or into Sheraton/Westin resorts, the fee is discounted to $169. If for some reason you end up enrolling your week, you will have a free II account paid for by MVC and all trades into MVC/Sheraton/Westin resorts will be free. For trades into resorts outside of that family, you would still pay the full $229 fee.

@jdougal I understand there are several TSs near HHI. Since that's where you want to go, and it has to be during school holidays, that's where you should buy. Since you don't seem to need all the bells and whistles of a deluxe resort, look at good, well run, owner controlled resorts on the resale market.

I agree the Marriott Vacation Club is a great option for both Hilton Head and Orlando. We're point owners and like the flexibility to go to multiple other locations. We haven't pulled the trigger on a week yet, but HHI will be the place if and when we do.

Keep it simple. A resale week in the right season at HHI will meet your stated needs. Trading comes later; you say you want to focus on your home resort.

Consider paying the $15 to join TUG so you have access to the literally hundreds of reviews other members have posted. It's a good place to start your research, and you should spend some time doing that before buying anything. Timeshares are easy to buy; the lemons are hard to sell (or even give away).

Suggestion only purchase a timeshare from an organization that will maintain their timeshare resorts with quality furniture, appliances and other resort amenities for future vacations; that will have quality timeshare resorts located all of the world.

I like MVC. That is my IMHO only.
