Super Ferry is killing Whales?

My parents loved riding Super Ferry so much, they talked about it during the whole time we were at Oahu.
When I came back home and was watching Discovery channel, I have heard big boats are killing male whales.
I think it has to do with mating sounds and big boats are interfering with whale sounds.
Do you think this is true?

There have been deaths caused by ships like the SuperFerry in other parts of the world, but none by the Hawaiian SuperFerry. If there had been, believe me we'd hear about it.

On the one hand, there is a risk that more traffic in whale populated areas will lead to deaths. On the other hand, the risk is probably exaggerated given that many ships, including cruise ships and even aircraft carriers, routinely patrol Hawaiian waters.

As with everything, you have radicals on either side. Search the 'net for both sides and draw your own conclusion.

No whale casualties yet, from the Hawaii Superferry. Some people in Maui dont like the Superferry because it brings more traffic into already congested roads. Others like it because it enables them to take their cars to Oahu. It also helps small businesses in transporting their goods.

Whale sensors

There was an article in the paper yesterday re new whale sensors they are installing on the Super Ferry, plus they have whale spotters on the boat. They really are very sensitive to this concern. Plus there are regs re how close you can get to the whales, and the Super Ferry will modify their route if there are a lot of whales.

Now if the Super Ferry would only start going to Kauai. The residents there really messed things up with their opposition; they let the activists speak for them and ignored all the benefits of having the Super Ferry. They are feeling it more since Aloha Air went under.

Do the whale spotters have a peg leg, a patch over one eye, and say " Aye maties, there she blows"?

Yes, but as rough as he looks, he's pretty harmless. It's his creepy friend, Queequeg that you have to watch out for.
