Summer Bay - Confirmed Reservation for 9/19 - Cancelled by RCI

Just received a call from RCI that they are cancelling my 9/19/08 - 2BR reservation for the Summer Bay Resort in Las Vegas. Had reserved a 2 BR, and they are offering a studio at the Grand Destination Vacation Club in Mesquite and refund of my exchange fees. Apparently some issue with the Summer Bay refurbishment being behind schedule, and the resort lying to RCI about the units availability (reservation was confirmed by RCI on 9/8/2008).

Any suggestions on how to proceed with RCI, as we have already booked our air travel.

Also a word of caution for anyone booked into Summer Bay in the next 45 days - be sure to have a backup plan.

And please no reminders about purchasing Cancellation insurance - though I am not sure that would have helped in this case.

I'd take the place they are offering me, and the refund to boot. since you can't change the airfare.

No way would I take a studio in Mesquite. With all the TS in Vegas, I can't believe RCI can't find you another 2 Bdr somewhere. Tell them, it's not acceptable and they need to find you something comparable to what you had. RCI always blames it on the resort or the owner.

Since your question is in regards to a problem with exchanging I am going to move this to the Exchange board that might be more helpful with your issue.

I have to agree. Vegas is flooded with timeshares, especially with last minute cancellations. Good luck!

RCI is currently offering a 1 bdrm at Cliffs of Peace Canyon in Vegas as a Getaway week with check-in on 9/20.

Mesquite is over an hour away from Las Vegas!

I'd tell them that Mesquite is unacceptable. The unit is too small, and there isn't that much to do there compared to Las Vegas. If you can find a larger unit there and feel like going to Bryce, Zion and Valley of Fire, that's another thing, but don't use it as a base for Vegas. The traffic will kill you.

If RCI can give you another exchange with days that almost match, I'd take that and just Priceline a room for the other day, or check out some of the specials going on.
