Going to Maui early in January.

Staying at the Maui Ocean Club.

Which airport is more comvenient?

If it is OGG, need to know the best way to get to the Ocean Club.

Many thanks,

from a New Yorker who knows zip about airports in Maui!

I'm guessing that's Marriott's Maui Ocean Club in the Lahaina/Kaanapali area? If so, there is an airport up that way that would be closer, but OGG is the main airport and there is more availability. There aren't all that many roads on Maui. What you basically do is cut across the island and then go up and around to Lahaina/Kaanapali.

OGG (Kahului) is the only major airport on Maui - Kapalua is closer to MOC, but only prop planes fly into Kapalua Airport (JHM.) You can take a prop plane from Oahu to Kapalua Airport, but before you decide, calculate:

difference in airfare
difference in rental car rates
limits on luggage weight

Directions/map from Airport to Marriott

Concur with Denise, but add the following. Island Air does not have as many flights or the quality of service as Hawaiian. You may have to wait a long time for a flight to catch Island Air and driving will be faster from Kahului. There is a lot more that can be said about why Hawaiian is better than Island Air, but the extra 30 minutes in driving is well worth while. It is actually, a very nice drive.

I just saw this on another thread:

I just did the exact same flight (and times) from Phl to PHoenix to HNL. We arrived a little early 2:15. Our interisland flight to Kaui was at 4:30 (or so).

You have to walk a long way (unless you take the Wiki Wiki Bus thing - that I didn't know about). We had so much time between flights. I think if you do the Wiki thing though you may have to go thru security again? (Not sure - someone said that here).

We did Island Air, and I wish we had done Hawaiian. Hawaiian had so many flights departing while we sat waiting for ours.

I assume you are planning on a rental car? A taxi or shuttle to the Marriott Ocean Club would be expensive and then you'd be stuck in that area for your entire trip.

You definitely need a car on Maui to get around. Once you're in the car, it's not a bad drive from OGG to the resort areas. I always fly into OGG, as do most tourists.

Flying into OGG is what we do. Rental cars are right there, and the best thing for us is Costco is right on the corner as you leave the airport. We stop there for provisions for the week (breakfasts, snacks, sandwich meat, maybe one dinner on the grill, and beverages). A short ride through the sugar cane fields brings you to the ocean, make a right turn and enjoy the views until you get just north of Lahaina when you make a left turn into Ka'anapaali. It is a nice ride - maybe 40 minutes - and builds the anticipation!

Getting around Maui is a breeze because there are so few roads and because the are lots of signs to guide you. From the airport, simply follow the signs to Lahaina and/or Kaanapali. Once you pass the town of Lahaina, MOC is a few miles down on the left.

I do recommend getting a map just to familiarize yourself with the island but you can get a nice one free from your rental car agency.
