I am interested in buying another timeshare unit or points, but have some conditions. We like to travel by auto so would like something that has motel/hotel availability - also like weekend stays more than week long stays. What would be the best buy to satisfy these conditions?

Timesharing works best if you use it for timeshares. You usually lose value when you do a conversion to hotel points. In other words, 7 nights of timeshare value will usually not give you 7 nights in a hotel.

For weekend stays, you probably need a pure points system, like Wyndham.

Here are some questions you can answer to help clarify your goals:

1) Where do you want your home resort to be?
2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?
3) What are your 5 top trade destinations?
4) How many people do you usually travel with?
5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?
6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance?
7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time?
8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars?
9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing?
10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?
11) Are you a detail oriented planner?
12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?

It would be great if there were a program like this

But there just isn't . There are a few that get close. You can buy a Marriott or a Westin from the developer and then you can use your points at hotels via a conversion process, and while you can do this, the economics make these very expensive for this type of use.

You can buy the new Holiday Inn Vacation Club points, and they also will allow you to use your points through RCI for hotel stays, again a terrible waste of points and very expensive.

You can buy a huge RCI points package and do the same thing, but it still will cost you more than paying cash for your motel stays.

Sorry,
that is just what is available,

Greg
