I am reasonably good at solving Sudokos, but hit upon something new while travelling in Wales. The Guardian and the Observer now have "Killer Sudokos." They are aptly named. You need to combine Sudoko skills with Crosssum skills. They can be just an absolute bitch to get started (or get past the first three or four numbers.) Fortunately, you do slowly pick up speed in a puzzle as you progress.

To see an example puzzle,

To find more, all the links marked "Killer Sudoko" on this page are just that.

I was going to show these to my wife but after looking at the link I'm thinking maybe I should leave well enough alone for now. We discovered sudukos while staying in a timeshare in San Francisco. We don't read the newspaper at home but the paper from the timeshare had the puzzle. Perhaps one of these new puzzles will appear in a future timeshare's paper and she can expand her anguish then.

I know. I love Sudoku but not sure I want to get frustrated with a new kind of puzzle.

I have written a program for myself that helps me solve Cross sums (aka Kakuro), and so would also help with Killer Sudoku. In essence, the user enters the number of squares and their sum. Then the user gives additional information, such as:
The number 9 is present,
The number 5 is absent,
There is either a 1 or a 2 present,
and the program shows all remaining possibilities.

The program runs under XP as long as the .NET framework (free) is installed.

If anyone would like a copy, email me. At the moment I'm in Carlsbad, CA, at the Tamarack, so it will be a week or so before I return and can create a link. I also need to add a help file if it is for public consumption.
