I attended a meeting today that resulted in a genuine “why didn’t I think of this sooner?” moment.
For owners—especially seniors/active duty/veterans—who find themselves trapped in an unwanted timeshare after exhausting every reasonable exit option, yet who still want to avoid defaulting on their contract, there may be another overlooked path: contacting their state lawmakers directly. When state senators or representatives (assembly members, delegates, etc.) hear directly from their own constituents, it can provide two meaningful benefits:
1. Direct intervention potential
A lawmaker or their staff may be willing to reach out directly to the resort or parent company—particularly in cases involving large, well-known brands. An inquiry coming from a state or federal office about a constituent’s situation can carry far more weight than repeated attempts by the owner alone and may lead to a more reasonable or compassionate outcome.
2. Increased awareness where it matters most
Each complaint helps educate the very people responsible for drafting and passing consumer protection laws. Many lawmakers have little direct exposure to the realities of the timeshare industry or the problems owners routinely face. Hearing these stories firsthand helps illuminate how widespread and severe these issues truly are—and why reform is needed.
For owners who feel they have no viable options left, this approach may not only help their individual situation but also contribute to broader awareness and long-term change.
I also plan to add this option to our "how to fight back" for owners who feel stuck in a timeshare in the hopes that this can truly become a more utilized option for so many owners in really awful situations regarding their timeshare ownership!
