More than 1,800 workers went on an open-ended strike this morning with no warning. "The union said after months of contract negotiations, the workers’ biggest concerns have still not been addressed. They’re demanding increased wages, fairer workloads, and a reversal of COVID-era cuts in guests services and amenities."

I was there during a strike years ago, before the Grand Islander. The man from management assigned to the bus depot said he never realized how hard that work was.

Does anyone know if this includes the Hokulani hotel, or is this just HHV?

So far, most of these strikes have only lasted a fews days at each location.

Well as the commercial says; this one is for real. I don't know if they are going to stay out until they get a good contract or do what I would do; go back after about a week and give the message that if we don't get a good contract we will go out the week before Christmas and not come back until a good contract. Peak vacation time rather than now low vacation time.

ah yes, I see this one is now classified as indefinite, the earlier ones, such as the labor day strike had all just been for a few days.

I wish everyone impacted good luck, and hope for speedy resolution

I wonder will the hotel union workers on the mainland followers their union workers in Hawaii?

It's a targeted strike, not all union hotel workers. I believe 1500 workers are also striking in San Francisco at 4 or 5 hotels.

Not sure what other cities might be involved

I know that a number of hotels, including several Hyatts and others in SF and other places, went on stroke for Labor Day weekend. Is this a new one for the mainland locations?

Cheers.

I read a news story this week that the same locations were back on strike. However I have not seen much other coverage of that

We stayed at a Hyatt in SF that evening (close to concert venue) and they did not strike either time so, even within a given chain, it's only some locations.

Cheers.

Correct, I think the strategy is to just target select locations. That limits the broader economic impacts, and focuses the effects on just a few property owners. Once you get one or two property owners to agree to new terms, its easier to use that as model for the others.

In this strike, i know both HHV and Hilton Union Square in SF are owner by Park Hotels and resorts, the big REIT spun out of Hilton a few years back. Reits often have big ownership by pension funds and often unions, thus might be more sympathetic to worker interests...

I hope it goes smooth for you, I have read some reports on FB of things being a mess, long lines and limited food and beverage options.

The major marching is right outside your door but it is peaceful. We keep our Lania doors open all the time so we hear it everyday from across the street but it is not really annoying since we understand the battle that is being waged.

The long lines for check in is unavoidable. Tropics has been closed before strike and has nothing to do with it. Country Market across the street from the Kalia Tower, in our building, is a great place to get some good reasonably priced food. There are many other options on Ala Moana Boulevard, Kalia Rd, and Lewers close by so limited food and beverage options at the HHV is really not an issue. We NEVER eat there.

There is so much better food within 10 minutes walking distance of the village, and if cooking then a trip to Ala Moana center is very useful for getting a more robust grocery selection.

Agreed. We went there for some fresh fish and it was great. We cooked all of our breakfasts and most of our dinners and it was great. Very low key and just sitting on the balcony with dinner and wine.

Cheers.

When going for the fish, go 2 blocks from there to Don Quijote. Their prices are comparable to Foodland, but a much wider selection.

Thanks. We're not likely to go back to Oahu any time soon (prefer Big Island), but we will certainly be back at some pointy and will keep this in mind. We actually went down to the dock area and some fish markets there as well for some variety, and that was nice as well.

Cheers.

I struggled with Oahu a lot until I was finally able to fall in love with it over the pandemic. The key is getting out of Waikiki for a day or two.

A day or two? How about everyday if possible :) I love Oahu!!! But I do like Big Island better. And any Hawaiian Island is better than where I am right now.
