Just wondering, my son filed his own tax return in 2017(not on ours as a dependent.) In 2018 can’t figure out why he was filed on our tax return as our dependent. So he didn’t get the stimulus check. We haven’t filed our 2019 tax return. Is it to late or can I file his tax return by himself not put him on ours and would he qualify for the stimulus check?

@ljlong15 My suggestion would be to file his 2019 tax return ASAP. Found this at Forbes.com which is pretty similar to your situation.

“Example 2. C is claimed as a dependent on her parents’ tax return for 2018. In 2019, C graduates college and gets a job, and is no longer claimed as a dependent.

Based on C’s 2018 return, she is not entitled to any payment, because she is claimed as a dependent on another’s return. Based on her 2019 return, however, she is entitled to a stimulus payment of $1,200. As a result, she should file her 2019 return as quickly as possible.”

From what I read...
If he did not qualify in 2018, but files a return for 2019 and is
within income limits, he'll get one. -- The sooner, the better.

Also, if he did not qualify in 2019, but files a return for 2020
and is within income limits, he'll get one, unless he already did.

Have him file 2019 tax year on his own and if he qualifies he should receive the check. If he doesn't, he may also need to file 2020 on his own as the check is a 2020 tax year refundable tax credit. Though with the latter, he won't get the money until 2021 when he files his return.

Did you get the $500 dependent credit on your stimulus payment?

If the son is 16 years of age or older, they wouldn't have. So even if you can claim them as a dependant, it doesn't mean you get the $500 extra. Just something for the OP to keep in mind.

The cutoff is 17th birthday during the tax year not 16.

similar situation for DD23. She was a dependent for 2019 but not for 2020. Hoping she'll get the 2nd stimulus check. She really needs it. Does anyone know if it's a refundable credit (meaning she gets a refund check)?
