Not quite the same. In The Stand, the virus was immediately deadly, and many people fell dead where they stood. This one takes longer.

As soon as it become apparent how serious the Corondavirus was going to be, I thought about The Stand. It's my favorite Stephen King book.

Ok, so no dreams at all? Hmm. As I remember it: Seems those who were left behind were the ones without any dreams, one way or the other. So it would seem you're not likely to be moving to Boulder or to Las Vegas...

Dave, (who remembers this book a lot better than he probably should...)

For those of you who haven't read The Stand, it's not really a horror novel like some of King's books - it's more of an epic post apocalyptic tale that came out in 1978 (Geez, was it that long ago?!) before that genre became so popular. If you like to read, and you haven't read it, you absolutely should! Maybe I will reread it - I haven't read it for a long time.

One interesting thing about The Stand, is that the author released another version in 1990 that was more than 300 pages longer, and also updated the dates in the book, and some cultural references. That edition has approximately 1,300 pages. I think the older edition is mostly out of print.

I thought of it when it became evident that we are in an uncontrolled pandemic. 'Bout time to re-read it. Like so many others, it's my favorite King book.

OK - I found my copy of the uncut version, and it has 1,147 pages - so it must depend on the printing: It's a beast!

*I had a hard time finding the book - some helpful person in my household (husband) put the dust jacket for "It" on it! But when I saw that I had 2 copies of "It," I figured it out.

Not so. There is no mention in the book about groups left behind, although I guess it's possible since there were probably survivors elsewhere in the world. But I think dreams were just a literary tool to gravitate the GOOD/EVIL that could make it to either Colorado or Las Vegas.

Yeah, the original release cut out some of the more ... er ... graphic, parts. After King became established, he had enough juice to get it released in its original form.

Don't quote me, but I'm remembering in the mini series, somebody had a conversation about which person they were dreaming of. And there was discussion about the people who weren't dreaming about anyone. Maybe the for me to watch things again. ;)

If you haven't read the book, you should. While the miniseries was good (very good, actually), the whole point of the novel is Good vs Evil and the book is better at exploring the inner dialog of the characters.

Wasn't the reasoning that King's publisher didn't think he had the draw to support the cost of a longer novel, so forced a lot of parts to be cut? The later release was unabridged, and therefore, "Original Manuscript" version?

I've read both versions, but it's been awhile. Quite awhile. actually. :)

Could be, it seems it was his 5th book published in 1978.

The Stand was my favorite also. I was so glad when he released the longer version. I thought something was wrong with me when I couldn’t follow the first one.

So I just sat down with "The Stand," to reread it and I realized that I haven't read a "real book" in about 10 years. (I have been reading ebooks.) I don't remember "real books" being so awkward, and heavy, and the font being so small! Plus, I had to turn on a bright overhead light, that I really didn't want on!

I spent the last week reading a "real book" -- a first edition of James Michener's Space, 624 pages altogether. For me, there has always been nothing so delightful as holding and reading a "real book" (not an e-version).
