Steven Hawking had a correction to the Mayan calendar which gave an end date of 2012. The re-calculated end date is 2020. Hawking's final work explains how the earth might disappear but as far as civilization on earth goes, it almost feels like we are in the process. This is satire in case you were wondering.

Yes. It seems timely, imo. In case you didn't see the satire in this, it is that the Mayan banking holidays were counted twice. The only banks the Mayan had were onshore, lol. Onshore like a river bank, lol.

Bill

“In many ways the Mayan’s were ahead of their time,” Hawking is quoted as saying, “but in others they were a little too clever for their own good. In this instance they made the mistake of double counting bank holidays, meaning their calendar isn’t due to run out for a further eight years. People should actually be worrying about 2020, that’s the real end of the civilised world.”

Even disregarding the satirical correction, I think that the Mayans did awfully well only having been eight years off in their calculations.

I read somewhere that the Mayans didn't count the leap years extra day so the calendar was off by about eight years because of that. Even so, the Mayan were better at keeping time than most including us.

Looking at the Ethiopian Calendar, which wasn't change by Pope Gregory the 13th, it looks like the real Dec 21 2012 is June 21, 2020. June 21 is the Summer Solstice which is accompanied by an eclipse.

NASA re-released this yesterday. It is about dodging the Dec 21, 2012 Mayan dealio that didn't happen. The article actually mentions Bolon Yokte. Supposedly, Bolon Yokte is mentioned as Satan in Mayan hieroglyphics. Kind of interesting.

"If we could time warp a Maya to the present day, they would say that Dec. 21, 2012, is a very important date. Many Maya believed that their gods who created the world 5125 years ago would return. One of them in particular, an enigmatic deity named Bolon Yokte' K'uh, would conduct old rites of passage, to set space and time in order, and to regenerate the cosmos." The world would be refreshed, not destroyed.
