We are currently staying at SurfWatch and are loving it! This is our fourth summer coming to Hilton Head but 1st time here. A co-worker owns two weeks at Aruba Marriott and we traded her week which she exchanged at SurfWatch for my week at SSR in November. I was a little nervous because we usually stay at the Disney resort and my kids love it. Well I had nothing to fear SurfWatch is awsome also. We are staying in the Ocean Vista building and the view is incredible. My wife and I were debating about purchasing a week in Hilton Head because we love it so much, well this visit cinched it. I spoke with a resale agent and with Marriott directly: $44,000 from Marriott with 200,000 points and instead of the 125,000 points for 2008 we can get another week here in August or resale thru a broker around $34,000 to allow seller to clear slightly more than if they resold directly to Marriott. Having a great time sad to leave! Happy to answer any questions. Will due a review when I get home.

Surfwatch is definately a great resort. We toured it last May when we were staying at Barony Beach. At that time, the salesman told us Surfwatch was sold out and was pushing Ocean Watch in Myrtle Beach. While I'd love to own there, I think for now I'll just exchange in using the weeks we already own. Fortunately we have little to no desire to be there during the busy summer months and would prefer Spring and Fall, which seem to be easier to exchange into.

They are currently selling resale at all Hilton Head resorts. The Marriott sales rep said that they were the number 1 sales center in the US and that they can sell any Marriott property.

Surfwatch is a GREAT property, my favorite on HHI. We also stayed in the Ocean Vista building last summer. Like you say, view was incredible. But before you buy, do your homework and check out the resale prices on the web (redweek, TUG, etc.). I'm sure you can do better than $34K.

They all say they're number 1. ;)

Some of the sales galleries are "international" sales offices. Our salesman at Ocean Pointe and in Vegas were allowed to sell anything Marriott had available.

We were at Surfwatch earlier this year on an AC and really enjoyed the resort. We were also in Ocean Vista - got a 3 bedroom. We own Barony and love HHI. I would love to try out all of the Marriott's there. We just bought points at DVC for an additional off season getaway.

Definately look at resale. GMAC also has a list of Marrott properties.

We love Surfwatch too. Be sure you like the quieter atmosphere in that area- many people like to be down near Coligny and all the action. We like the quieter area around Surfwatch and Barony- it's just personal choice. If you prefer more action then you should look at Grande Ocean.

Resale will definitely save money, and this should be a good trader (if you ever want to- we always use our week).

I'm sad we leave tommorrow

That's my favorite part.....The Quiet. It is very peaceful. I toured Grand Ocean and it was beautiful but I think the quiet of surfwatch is a better fit for me.

That's also why I like SW and BB better. I also love the Port Royal section of the island.

"resale thru a broker around $34,000"

Take the time to search the TUG recommended resale sites and you'll find broker listings where the asking price for a 2 br, platinum, ocean vista, Surfwatch unit is less. Remember that these are only asking prices too.

We will be at S/W next week, arriving July 27th and can't wait. We stayed at Grande Ocean last summer & loved HHI so much we had to buy at SW. This will be our first time at S/W so I'm glad to hear you are having a great experience.

Any tips, must do's? Our kids are 6. We will be staying at the Ocean Marsh Bldg. Thinking about sending the kids to the Princess and Pirate Party on Monday, so DH & I could have our first day alone to completely relax. Maybe even rent one of those cabanas at the Ocean Pool. Any on-site activites you would recommend?

So glad you had a good time!!!

For onsite activities, they usually do smores at the firepit one night - kids like that. Also, when we were there last summer, they had an alligator 'encounter'. It was really fun and interesting. It was in the clubhouse (evening) and a local guy brought 2 small alligators. He told a lot about them, answered questions patiently, and let everyone (who wanted to) hold them. There was a cost of (I think) $15 for the whole family. Don't know if they're doing it this year but worth finding out.

It's funny that your friend traded into Surfwatch through II and then you traded with him.

I recently asked this question about trading an II obtained week on another thread, and several experienced owners told me that this would not be legal to do I would essentially bartering my week obtained from II.

I emailed II this exact scenario and got a reply two weeks later telling me that it would be OK to do.

I thought I.I. only got upset if you were caught renting out an exchanged week and profiting from the transaction. Seems to me that trading weeks with someone else does no damage and provides no profit, thus no rule against it.

Just got home

We just got home ton of traffic around DC. My daughters did the teddy bear camp and liked it alot. The marshmellow roast was fun (remember to bring your hot dogs). The pool party and flip flop decorating were only ok. If you want to do the princess party you need to book two days in advance per recreation staffer we were talking with (it was on a Monday). I brought home the activity sheet from last week if anyone is interested I can fax it to them.

I'm not currently a Marriott owner (yet but hopefully soon) so you guys know way more about it than me but no money changed hands and no profit was made. My name was also on the reservation so maybe they purchased the guest certificate (I will ask them when I get back to work). I know we never intentionally meant to break/bend any rules!!

Thank you. I am currently checking out other resale brokers. We are planning on purchasing at SurfWatch.

We'll be there same week as you, but arriving on the 26th. Traded an Ocean Pointe Studio my FIL had for a 2-Bdrm. Gotta love flexchange, but I had to be on at midnight (1am CST) to grab it.

Absolutely more than worth the time!! Enjoy your stay at SW!!

We will also be arriving from New Jersey on July 26 and staying at Surfwatch. We own at Barony Beach but exchanged to Surfwatch---we love it there.

One of the things that struck me about Surfwatch is that there are some houses by the rear entrance that little more than shacks. One had a "For Sale by Owner" sign an a number. I was tempted to call just to learn the asking price.

A couple that lives on the island told me that there is a lot a cheap property there. They explained that the pricier properties are within the plantations.

Charles,

It depends what you call cheap. The newly built houses are 1-2 million a piece and the tear-downs are $600-700 k (and up). I don't know how much the lots are but I'm sure they are in similar price range despite being so small. To me these properties are quite expensive but I guess if you compare that to 5 million for an ocean front house in Sea Pines I guess it does seem cheaper. Ocean front condos are going for 1 million or so (location, location, location).
