Starr Pass is mostly duplexes built around one or more golf courses, about 20 minutes west of Tucson center. We were there in December, primarily to tour the Sonora Desert region all around Tucson. I would guess that summer is off-season in Tucson but I'm not sure. Starr Pass is on a road that dead-ends at a large Marriott resort. Starr Pass has its own restaurant and the Marriott has a least one and maybe two restaurants.
Since you already have a sports agenda you may not have much time to tour but you do have easy access to the Sonora Desert Museum (actually a desert zoo and botanical garden) and the western part of the Saguaro National Park. Going west and south from Starr Pass is easy, going north and east is a bit of a bother. There is a major construction project that has closed most of the northbound Tucson exits on the interstate so you have to plan your routes to and from town and points east and north. Maybe it will be done by the time you get there.
Edit: BTW - I think Starr Pass is a fairly difficult exchange. For some reason the Golf Resort seemed to be filled up with Golfers. We found that one week in Dec on II and traded in using DRI points. Varsity Club seems to always be available and is closer to the University but if there is a major sports event going on it might be tough to get there also.
