This 50 pc. set of flat ware is gold tone and has been sitting in a closet for maybe 70 years. It was still in the original plastic and linen flat ware holders. I don't know why any one would save this very nice table ware. Anyway, its going into the dishwasher and will become our every day stuff. It was made in Japan and stashed away in a Hawaiian kitchen cabinet. No one ever used them, until now. I don't get it. Are they toxic ?

Are they stainless steel? I think they are fine. Look up the maker and find them on Replacements.com. I think if they were NOT safe, Replacements would flag them or not sell them.

They are gold plated. I did look them up but can't find this exact set. From what I read I think gold plated is fine to use but since we are planning on abusing this set in the dish washer who knows.

Do not put them in the dishwasher. My grandma's set is the one I have, and they are not dishwasher safe. The gold wears off. Mine are probably about that old.

My silverware came from a thrift shop about twenty years ago, brand new. Sasaki Orbit Gold. The pieces have round balls on the end, and with mine, they were gold plated. Over the years and the many trips through the dishwasher, the gold has worn off. It still looks pretty nice. I think the only thing you have to worry about is the gold slowly wearing off in the dishwasher.

Thanks for the advice but these are going to be the everyday utensils so they will last as long as they last. Since there is only two of us it should last a while. We both used a fork tonight. They are kind of heavy and sharper than what we have been using. We have my wifes mothers Sterling Silver in a case some where. My mother in law would take these out on very Special Occasions and Holidays. They were always hand washed and they are heavy. These gold ones seem as heavy. I wonder if its gold plated sterling silver.

Our stainless from Japan is very heavy. We also have some in the same pattern that was made in Korea; those are lighter.

What is a "Hawaiin Kitchen Cabinet"? The flatware is beautiful. If you go to a gold dealer they may have an XRF detector that can tell you if they are silver or stainless

Many of the low budget restaurants we visit have low budget silverware and I've been kidding my wife I want to put together a kit of our own silverware to take to these places. I'd still wash this set by hand, especially considering how little you say you use.

What is a "Hawaiin Kitchen Cabinet"?

These could have been stashed anywhere. I bought them from an online estate sale in Hawaii. Originally I was going to give these to my grand daughter but my wife likes them so I told her I bought them for her. :)
