Staying at the Windjammer and St. Lucia for the first time in July. We'll be flying into SLU so won't have a long ride to resort but will flying out of the other airport that is much further away. We've been told a ride to that airport is $85.00. We'd like to rent a car at sometime for groceries and to see the island. Do we need a car for the week? Is there a grocery close to get provisions? Recommendations on rental companies? Cost I'm seeing is $60 per day for a car. We're not tour people. We just want to explore the island, snorkel, crash on the beach. Thanks for your expertise!!!!!

We have vacationed at WJ for about 10 years. We always rent a car from Cool Breeze. They have the best rates, we've only had a problem with a car once and they changed it up right away. They have a kiosk at both airports so you can rent from one and return to another.
We never eat at the resort except for making our own breakfast and buying lunch on the beach. There are plenty of restaurants, shopping and a new casino a 10 minute drive away.
Many of the excursions will pick you up at WJ.
Hope this helps
Renee

Car Rentals

Here's the website for car rentals:

http://www.coolbreezecarrental.com

I'm also thinking of renting and have been doing some research. Here's a quote from a Castries local on the St. Lucia forums on Trip Advisor:

"There are quite a number of companies here. Avis, Budget, National, Cost you less, Cool Breeze, Rent a ride, Drive A Matic, Luxury and a slew of smaller ones. I always advise to negotiate for the best rates. You will need an international drivers license or purchase temporary permits at US$20.00 per person per month. The rental companies will have that available. Most charge for collision damage insurance and all charge a $5.00 per day government tax. Expect to pay $700.00 and up or two weeks rental."

The international license is for a 3 month period. Hope this helps. If you find any deals or any other info, let me know please!

I have never rented a car in St. Lucia but friends of mine usually rent a car for 2 or 3 days to do some restaurants, visit sites and get groceries. They always just rent from the rental car company right on property at windjammer. I don't know anything about the car rental company or prices but they told me they are competitive and I believe they have dropped off the car at the airport at the end of their week.

If you add up a few days rental with the taxi fees to and from WJ, you may as well just rent a car if you are comfortable doing your own driving.
Cool Breeze also gives one day free.
