Hi

We are arriving at STT @ 1:30pm on Sat 3/28. I am wondering about the logistics/timing of renting a Jeep on St. Thomas and using the Love City car ferry. My Questions:
  1. Car rental agency suggestion for airport pick up and ability to take to St John
  2. Can we make the 3pm ferry or should we reserve 5pm?
  3. If 5pm then extra time for grocery shop? Good spot to shop on St. Thomas?
Appreciate your ideas/thoughts!

Its hard to imagine you could make the 3pm so I'd arrange for the 5pm. There is a Moe's Supermarket not far from the ferry that you can stop at.

I used Amalie Car Rental the last time I was there a couple of years ago. They were great to work with.

You should be able to make the 3 PM ferry if there are no delays. I just got to the ferry and took the next one available. This was before the devastating hurricanes, so I don't know what the current situation is.

We also use AmalieCar (every year).
It will be tight making it by 3pm. Depends on traffic (cruise ships).

There is another Car Ferry service - so you may want to check VINOW.com for current car ferry service info.

Cost-U-Less (Costco-lite) is on way to RedHook - otherwise just shop at STJ Market or StarFish Market. Prices not much different.

We used to always use Amalie but we have started to rent on STJ ... I like the parking in town option

Parking in CB is a huge factor nowadays - the public lot is chocked full of abandoned cars.

Or pay a weekly rate at the place next to Police Station.

I also posted this in the WSJ thread, but am curious if anyone would recommend the Big Red Barge or Love City Car Ferries or are they basically the same service wise? The cost for a round trip is the same. Thanks.

Best regards.

Just buy 1 way ticket and take barge that you need.

I 2nd this. Even if you happen to end up on the same barge, as we did most recently, is it worth saving $20 to risk losing some of your vacation time?

RT as one ticket is $50. Two one-ways is $70. In the context of vacation expenses as a whole, this isn’t high on the list of places to try to save money.

Totally agree. One year we bought a RT ticket only to have the barge go out of service while we were on island. Never again.

I see that you are concerned about timing for arriving at 1:30 and making a 3pm ferry.

So, what is the approx amount of time to allot from arrival to ferry?

This would include de-planing, baggage claim, p/u of car (Avis - in airport), and then driving to car ferry port

We arrive closer to 12noon. We could choose to shop for food in St Thomas or just wait until we get to St Thomas since it will only be 2 of us and may eat most meals out.

Could we make the 3:30? it essential to make a reservation? Are the car lines as really as long as 2 hours (as it says on the Westin website)? We are arriving mid week in the spring.

Lastly, the car ferry schedule shows a "Daily" Schedule and a "Monday-Friday" Schedule. Does "Daily" mean weekend? and that there are both schedules running mid-week?

Daily
  • 7:00 am*
  • 9:00 am
  • 11:00 am
  • 1:00 pm
  • 3:00 pm
  • 5:00 pm
  • 7:00 pm
Monday – Friday
  • 7:30 am*
  • 9:30 am
  • 11:30 am
  • 1:30 pm
  • 3:30 pm
  • 5:30 pm
  • 7:30 pm*
