Miami Herald article says Disney has dumped the contractor for the remodel at SSR. Hired a new one raising the budget from $48M to $61M.

Uh-oh

That's just the tip of the iceberg

"Within two or three weeks into the project, when crews opened up a wall, they found a defect that violated fire and building code. “This life-safety issue existed at the property for more than 15 years without having previously been corrected by Disney,” the lawsuit said.

I read the article and while I realize it was from the plaintiff's side, it sure didn't sound good for Disney.

Interesting. Wonder if the code was updated since the original build. Curious to know if this was the same contractor that had the fold down beds that were falling off the walls onto people.

Also consider significant increases in raw materials and construction material. Not sure it accounts for a 25% increase, but many materials are hard to come by right now increasing costs of many items.

15 years ago in Florida, housing and construction were booming. It was the peak of the bubble. Construction crews were going at warp speed. Inspections likely couldn't keep up. It doesn't surprise me that corners were cut.

I wonder how many other hotels, resorts, motels or timeshares in Florida have this same problem ?
This project at Disney have open up a huge can of worms for the construction industry in the state Florida and the State of Florida Inspection process. IMHO.
Someone, now these to check on the construction contractor, who completed this project and on the city inspector who passed this project ? IMHO.

Owners at SSR can look for an increase in MF over the next 3 to 5 years. IMHO.

Also, who knows how much this lawsuit may cost owners.

Then there's the inevitable lawsuit by owners against DVD for faulty construction and increased cost due to this issue.

I’ve been through this before and yes SSR owners will need to open their wallet. Disney sells itself so smart move would be to sell.
