Hello! I'm a newbie starting to look into timesharing and found a company called SPM Resorts, Inc. which seem to have resorts in many of the places we vacation and can easily drive to (on the east coast). I tried to search the forum and didn't find much for feedback on this company. They are affiliated with both RCI and II. I didn't find many resales for these resorts on the usual recommended places (ebay, redweek). Is this a good place to start looking?
Thanks, Karen

Not a resort company

SPM is a management company - they don't develop or "own" resorts.

SPM is one of the better national management companies. They are not the control freaks that some of them are, and they have a good reputation for honesty and efficiency. They manage two OBX resorts and the owners I know at those resorts are very happy with them. They are a big improvement since the HOA's kicked Fairfield (now Wyndham) out as management.

My resort, Tropic Sun Towers in Ormond Beach, Florida is managed by them. So far I have no complaints about them.

SPM has many faults and complaints on internet

I googled "SPM complaints" and found loads of problems with SPM resorts. When you let them rent your timeshare, they take 30% off of the top as well as an apprximately 4% credit card charge on you for another person renting paying with a credit card. I recommend that you rent your timeshares using a fair company or just do it yourself. SPM are a bunch of money grubbers !!!

30% is a typical practice and does not sound outrageous to me. They do place a surcharge for credit card transaction and again this is not unusual. I own a SC resort that is managed by SPM. I would consider SPM above average amongst all the resort management companies that I deal with over the past 15 years of timesharing.

It's called a commission

30% doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Dealing with renters yourself is a pain that most casual timesharers don't want to deal with.

A related observation...

Agree that 30% is SOP for rental commission. One unmentioned benefit of having any management company conduct the rental on behalf of the owner is that the management company then also assumes full responsibility for the "tenants", as opposed to a private rental in which (regardless of well intentioned provisions within a private rental agreement), the actual owner of the week would ultimately be held accountable by the resort for any tenant damages exceeding the renter credit card "security deposit".
