In an earlier thread I asked if anyone had successfully unsubscribed from spam by sending a letter to the culprits. I thought I would give it a try anyway, even though I didn't get any positive responses to the earlier post.

I sent a letter to both of the major "offenders". They both claimed to be "CAN-SPAM" compliant. It took several weeks, but both spammers have stopped sending emails to me. I have gone from 20 - 40 a day to 2 or 3 a day, and some days I don't get any spam. The ones I do get are either of the Nigerian type, or the adult type, and don't offer any way to unsubscribe.

That's interesting. How did you get an address to mail a letter. Most spam has spoofed sender email addresses. Sounds like you view all unwanted email as spam, even if it comes from a legitimate company.

What do you do about spam that originates outside the US?

All unsolicited emails are spam to me. :) The legitimate spammers comply with the CAN-SPAM regulations. As part of that, they have to include a mailing addy in their posts, and a way to unsubscribe from that email. The problem is that these companies can represent hundreds if not thousands of companies who pay them to send out emails. AND you have to unsubscribe from each company that pays the spammer. However, if you write the spammer, they are supposed to remove your name from their records. In my case, almost all the spam was generated by two companies, so I wrote them both, and it worked. :whoopie:
