Space X Makes History: Falcon 9 Launches, Lands Vertically - by Devin Coldewey and Keith Wagstaff/ Tech/ Innovation/ NBC News/ nbcnews.com

"SpaceX completed an historic vertical landing of its Falcon 9 rocket on Monday night — the first time such a feat had been achieved.

The launch and landing in Cape Canaveral, Florida, were the first from the private U.S. spaceflight company since its rocket exploded on liftoff in June.

"Welcome back, baby!" SpaceX founder Elon Musk tweeted after touchdown..."

Saw it lift off which is pretty common living on the space/treasure coast. What was uncommon was that it was past dark and I was still out! Pretty cool, glad they nailed the landing.

Watch: Space X Got Even Closer to Landing a Rocket on a Drone Ship - But it Still Ended in a Giant Fireball - by Tim Fernholz/ Space Business/ Quartz/ qz.com

"SpaceX’s quest for reusable rockets—specifically, to land them on sea-going drone ships—is all about steady improvement.

Today (Jan. 17), the company successfully launched an ocean-measuring satellite for NASA, and attempted to return the first stage of the rocket safely back to earth and land it on an unmanned ship floating off the California coast.

It was a fairly nice landing, but according to SpaceX founder and chief designer Elon Musk, a “lockout collet” on one of the legs failed to engage, tilting the rocket over and causing an explosion.

But that’s definitely an improvement on this test from April 2015:.."

SpaceX is Ready to Try Another Droneship Landing - by Carl Franzen/ Space/ Popular Science/ popsci.com

"The last one didn't stick.

SpaceX has a pretty good track record when it comes to launching stuff into into space (an explosion last summer notwithstanding). It's less good at landing those rockets (or as Indiana Jones once memorably put it: "Fly? Yes. Land? No").

The company has tried four times to land its first stage Falcon 9 rocket booster upright on a drone platform in the ocean, and four times it has failed. But here we are on the eve of another SpaceX rocket launch scheduled for tomorrow evening at 4:43 p.m. Eastern (weather permitting), and SpaceX has its droneship named “Of Course I Still Love You” back out in the Atlantic, ready to catch the first stage of the rocket on its way down, as a new SpaceX Instagram post shows...."

Space X Successfully Lands Its Rocket on a Floating Drone Ship for the First Time - by Loren Grush, The Verge/ Science/ theverge.com

"SpaceX has finally landed its Falcon 9 rocket on a drone ship at sea, after launching the vehicle into space this afternoon. It’s the first time the company has been able to pull off an ocean landing, after four previous attempts ended in failure. Today’s success is a crucial milestone for SpaceX, as it shows the company can land its rockets both on solid ground and ocean....."

SpaceX Successfully Landed Another Rocket on a Drone Ship - by Emily Canandrelli/ SpaceX/ Tech Crunch (TC)/ techcrunch.com

"SpaceX successfully launched the Japanese communications satellite, JCSAT-14 on their Falcon 9 rocket at 1:22am EST today from Cape Canaveral, Florida. After the launch, the company soft-landed the first stage of the rocket on their drone ship “Of Course I Still Love You” – the second time this has ever been done.

On April 8th, SpaceX made their first rocket recovery on that same drone ship. Tonight’s landing, however, was even more impressive. The odds of a successful soft-landing were slim due to the mission requirements for this particular launch..."

It's pretty impressive. Not only did they land two successfully but it was two in a row.

I have a friend who works at Space X and she's really proud of her company right now.

I'm proud too and am not an employee or investor, just a pre-orderer of the Tesla 3! :p Super things for space exploration.

SpaceX Successfully Lands a Falcon 9 Rocket at Sea for the Third Time - by Sean O'Kane/ The Verge/ theverge.com

"SpaceX just successfully landed the first stage of its Falcon 9 rocket on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean. It was the third time in a row the company has landed a rocket booster at sea, and the fourth time overall.

The landing occurred a few minutes before the second stage of the Falcon 9 delivered the THAICOM-8 satellite to space, where it will make its way to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO). GTO is a high-elliptical orbit that is popular for satellites, sitting more than 20,000 miles above the Earth. The 3,100-kilogram satellite will spend 15 years there, helping to improve television and data data signals across Southeast Asia...."

SpaceX Successfully Lands Its Sixth Falcon 9 Rocket After Launch - by Loren Grush/ Science/ Space/ SpaceX/ The Verge/ theverge.com

"And the fourth drone ship landing.

Another one of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets successfully landed on a floating drone ship this evening, after the vehicle launched a Japanese communications satellite into orbit. The feat marks the fourth time SpaceX has landed one of its vehicles at sea and the company’s fifth rocket recovery overall this year.

Tonight’s landing was particularly challenging for SpaceX, too. The Falcon 9 had to carry its onboard satellite — called JCSAT-16 — into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO). It’s a highly elliptical orbit that takes the satellite 20,000 miles out beyond Earth’s surface. Getting to GTO requires a lot of speed and uses up a lot of fuel during take off, more so than getting to lower Earth orbit. That makes things difficult for the rocket landing afterward. Not only is the rocket subjected to "extreme velocities and re-entry heating" during its fall back to Earth, according to SpaceX, but there’s less fuel leftover for the vehicle to reignite its engines and perform the necessary landing maneuvers..."

SpaceX and NASA Have Released Full Statements About Thursday's Rocket Explosion - Here's What They Said - by Dave Mosher/ Science/ Business Insider/ businessinsider.com

"More than a day after the fiery explosion of a Falcon 9 rocket on a launchpad in Cape Canaveral, Florida, both SpaceX and NASA have issued full statements.

The rocket catastrophically blew up at a launchpad called Space Launch Center 40 (SLC-40) at 9:07 a.m. on September 1, right before a routine engine-firing test.

Although no one was hurt during the blast, Facebook's $200 million Amos-6 satellite — bound to provide internet service to the developing world — was utterly destroyed.

The blast reportedly shattered windows nearby, knocked sliding doors off peoples' homes farther away, and was heard as far as 30 miles from SLC-40, according to local Florida TV stations.

The cause of the mishap isn't known at this time, and experts say it will hamper the ambitious launch schedule planned by aerospace company, which is owned by entrepreneur Elon Musk...."

Space X's Falcon 9 Explosion Likely Caused by Breached Helium System - by Loren Grush/ Space X/ Space/ Science/ The Verge/ theverge.com

"SpaceX’s recent Falcon 9 explosion seems to have been caused by a breach in the "cryogenic helium system" of the vehicle's upper oxygen tank, according to an update from the company. However, SpaceX says the accident is not connected to last year's Falcon 9 explosion, when a rocket disintegrated en route to the International Space Station.

On September 1st, one of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets exploded on a launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida as the vehicle was being fueled in preparation for a static fire test. The test involves turning on the rocket's engines while the vehicle is constrained. The static fire was supposed to determine if the Falcon 9 was ready for its upcoming launch of the Israeli communications satellite, Amos-6, but both the rocket and the satellite were destroyed in the explosion before the test even occurred...."

SpaceX Sticks the Landing in Triumphant Return
By Marina Koren/ Science/ The Atlantic/ theatlantic.com

"After a four-month launch hiatus, the company’s Falcon 9 rocket successfully sent a communications satellite into orbit and returned its first stage to a floating robotic barge.

SpaceX successfully launched a rocket into orbit Saturday for the first time since a launchpad explosion last fall destroyed another rocket and its $200 million payload, just days before their scheduled flight.

The Falcon 9 rocket launched from an air force base in California’s central coast, carrying 10 satellites for Virginia-based communications company Iridium. Its first stage then returned to Earth and landed on a drone ship in the Pacific Ocean, a maneuver the spaceflight company has completed several times already.

The successful launch restores some momentum for Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The company went into hibernation after its rocket and the Israeli communications satellite on board went up in flames during a fueling process. SpaceX, along with several federal aviation and transportation agencies, spent four months investigating the incident. It announced the results earlier this month, saying the explosion was caused by a failure of the rocket’s helium tanks...."

SpaceX Captures Stunning Shot of Falcon 9 Landing
By Michelle Starr/ Sci-Tech/ C/net/ cnet.com

"SpaceX's Falcon 9 reusable rocket made another successful launch and landing on the weekend, marking the company's seventh success since the start of the reusable launch system program in 2013. You can read all about the exciting event here, but this gorgeous photo deserves its own glory.

It's just one of a series captured of the rocket's first stage. This is after it successfully separated from the second stage and sent it on to low-Earth orbit with its payload of communications satellites. As it returned to Earth, it landed nearly dead in the middle of the waiting drone ship in the Pacific Ocean, with equipment waiting to record the moment...."

SpaceX Launches and Lands Another Rocket
By Jackie Wattles and Amanda Barnett/ CNN Tech/ Money/ money.cnn.com

"SpaceX is back in action and has successfully completed a historic launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
After a delay 24 hours earlier over concerns about the rocket, the launch on Sunday appeared to go flawlessly.

It was the first SpaceX launch from Florida since a Falcon 9 exploded on a launch pad on September 1, 2016.

Sunday's launch was also the first from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39 since the NASA Space Shuttles was retired in July 2011. The complex has a rich past: It was used to launch the Apollo moon missions..."

SpaceX Successfully LSaunches and Lands a Used Rocket For the First Time Ever
By William Gayde/ Science/ SpaceX/ Techspot/ techspot.com

"SpaceX makes history with a reused rocket.

Some things, like gum and diapers, are designed to only be used once. According to SpaceX though, their Falcon 9 rocket is not one of those things. For the first time ever, SpaceX has launched and landed a rocket that had flown to space before. This historic milestone was described as a "huge revolution in spaceflight" by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk following the mission. The rocket carried a communications satellite to orbit that will provide service to Latin America. This rocket was previously flown in April of last year.

SpaceX started working 6 years ago to try to make their rockets reusable, something Musk has envisioned for a decade and a half. Before this point however, SpaceX had to build and test an entirely new rocket for every launch. This ended up costing tens of millions of dollars to do. The actual part that is reused is the core which houses the main engines and most of the rocket fuel....."

Watch SpaceX Outdo Itself With Second Successful Launch and Landing Within 48 Hours [Updated]
By Rhett Jones/ SpaceX/ Gizmodo/ gizmodo.com

"Little by little, SpaceX manages to break new ground for itself with each successive launch. Today, Elon Musk’s aerospace startup will attempt to launch its second rocket within 48 hours. The launch window opens at 4:24PM EST and you can see it right here.

Friday’s launch successfully sent a Bulgarian communications satellite into orbit on a used Falcon 9 rocket. Once again, the booster was able to safely land after reentry. “Rocket is extra toasty and hit the deck hard (used almost all of the emergency crush core), but otherwise good,” Musk tweeted.

Though it seems like SpaceX is getting the hang of this launch-and-land thing, there are no guarantees. Today’s Falcon 9 rocket is new and will use redesigned grid fins. Last night, Musk tweeted it will be, “flying with larger & significantly upgraded hypersonic grid fins. Single piece cast & cut titanium. Can take reentry heat with no shielding.”

That could mean that everything is even more likely to go well, or it could mean more opportunity for a screw up. Either way, you get a disaster or something really inspiring...."
