Airlines hike fares for the second time this year
A fare increase of $10 per round-trip, initiated by Southwest Airlines and matched Thursday by most of its competitors, represents the second industry-wide price hike in 2012.

Southwest, the nation's largest carrier of domestic passengers, increased its round-trip fares for most of its routes starting Wednesday. By Thursday, most of the nation's major carriers had matched Southwest's price hike.

We have used SW almost exclusively for almost 8 years. We do the two to three hour drive from Toronto to Buffalo. We have loved their low fares, friendly FA's and great Rapid rewards program as well as their wonderful change/cancel policies. Lately, though, we are becoming more and more disenchanted with SW- much higher fares, poorer customer service, the new RR2 program. :bawl:

I remember flying Southwest for $39.00 from VA to Florida one way ?

Now you have more than $39.00 in taxes on an airline ticket.

Yeah, that' awful!

Airfare is getting ridiculous, but gas prices are going up, and so will fuel prices. I guess SW is preparing for the increases to stay ahead.

I like Southwest just fine, but I am a bargain hunter, and I book whatever is lowest. The "bags fly free," is something I figure into every purchase.

When we go to LAX in a few weeks, Rick and I don't need to check baggage for four days. We are using Frontier this time, because their prices were lower, but not by much. I wanted an assigned seat, and that had a lot to do with my decision to not take Southwest for $10 more.

It will take me forever to get a free ticket on Southwest. :( I have very few miles built up, and we have used them four times in the last years. I don't get the program. It's so much more difficult than the other programs!

Rick brought me a CC offer for Southwest's credit card, and it's good for two free flights. I don't think I will sign up. That would be all I would use it for, because I can buy the tickets through Capital One Venture Card and get reimbursement of my SW fares.

We fly SW consistently, but def. do watch for the $59 (now called the $69) fares. They have put these specials out many times over the past several months and we have these fares booked throughout the year.

However, of course, all of our dates of travel for family could not be met within these specials, but we will keep our fingers crossed for other specials to hit our travel dates. :)

I still fly Southwest as often as I can. I do have a Chase Southwest credit card and there is where I get most of my points these days. When I was able to charge both of my dd's college tuition on that card I was really racking up the miles/points. :D I am still getting enough points that I qualify for a free companion fare which has made dh's flights the last couple of years free.

I agree. It happens when they get big - arrogance seems to creep in somehow. However I like the no charge for checked luggage. Also, it is very easy to cancel or change tickets compared to other airlines.
