I pulled out my favorite cream-colored cardigan sweater this weekend and was again reminded that paying for quality can be worthwhile.

It was a $50 sweater on clearance for $25 -- in 1981. Except for some stretched button holes, it's in great shape. Quality lasts.

I found a Consumer Price Index website and calculated today's price.

That $50 sweater would be $111 today.

Be honest. You just wanted to brag because you can still get into something you bought in 1981 :)

The logic excapes me -- as always!

If "you get what you pay for," you should have paid regular price, say, $38, for a sweater made more poorly. It would long since have been thrown away, presumeably, but you would have paid more!

"You get what you pay for" is almost always a falsehood. I'd restate it as you get what you shop for. Let's face it, paying significantly more than a dollar for a pencil is unlikely to get you a better pencil. Knowing a little about pencils is more likely to net you a better pencil.

I never can understand why people use the saying.

It's probably popular around here because most of us purchased our first timeshare from a developer.
