If you're coming to Las Vegas and not renting a car, you might be interested in this activity from Travelzoo today. If you're renting a car, you can easily drive yourself there.

I second Hoover Dam as a LV side trip. Seeing both the dam and the bridge is a real treat. I couldn't believe how close it was (maybe 1/2 hour?). It was an excellent half day trip especially for my husband who has no use for the strip.

We also went hiking at Red Rock Canyon which was beautiful. (My daughter said "Figures. You and dad go to to Vegas and you go hiking") :p

Hoover Dam was a nice treat! I would say 30 minutes is about right as far as time goes. On our way we were very curious about the body of water that we saw and ended up stopping at Lake Meade. There is a really nice diner called the Omlette House (I have been dreaming about the food there lately) over on Tonopah (5 minute drive). There is also Silver and Gold (the pawn shop from the TV serier Pawn Stars) which is also about 5 minutes away from the strip. We went to a swap meet as well (about 10 minutes away). There was also a comedy club near Freemont street. IF you go over to the visitors center they will have plenty of booklets and suggestions. Lets not forget shopping at the outlets either:cheer:

On our recent trip to LV we visited a historical ranch that we really liked - Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. This is a charming historical ranch with the original ranch house and many out buildings, that they claim was the first permanent settlement in the Las Vegas area. It has been owned by many celebrities including Vera Krupp and Howard Hughes. The free ranch house tour provided by the docents is very interesting, and the location is gorgeous. You can also do some short hikes/walks around the ranch, and we saw wild burros. State Park Admission is $9. http://parks.nv.gov/smr.htm This is near Red Rock Canyon. If you like ranches and history - it's a must do.

If you head over to Spring Mountain then drop on over to the little hamlet of Blue Diamond and check out the wild burro's roaming the town. :)
