A friend of mine was released from the hospital a few days ago and will probably not be able to work again. She was in the SS system for 12 years prior to this but her SS disability benefits will be minimal, certaintly not enough to live on. My questions are: What is SSI and how does it fit in with social security disability and is there any other New York state benefits for the disabled. The SS website was a little vague, at least for me, and I suggested that she should go to the local SS office armed with at least a little knowledge about the system. Thanks for any help.

Silverfox,

You've probably already looked at this portion of the Social Security Website but if not
http://www.ssa.gov/d&s1.htm

this will give you info about the Social Security Disability Insurance Program and
the Supplemental Security Income Program (SSI). Also it has the Benefit Eligibility Screening Tool (BEST) to help identify all the different Social Security Programs for which your friend may be eligible.
