I put an exchange on hold yesterday for Kaui in a 1 bedroom on 6/25/09. After researching, I realized that this wasn't the resort I thought it was, so I released it about an hour later.

This morning I get an automated phone call from RCI telling me that they have a vacation on hold for me and that I can confirm within 72 hours. I go look on-line and they have me in a studio in Kona for 6/6/09.

What the heck!

So, I guess releasing a vacation doesn't really release it? They just put in an on-going search. Since I found the original resort by selecting 'Hawaii' from 6/01/09 (for 5 weeks), they just put that in my on-going search which pulled up Kona for 6/6/09.

So, I wonder what would have happened if I didn't manually release it. Would they have automatically confirmed it for me? I know for a fact that I did not select 'On-going search'.

You really have to stay on top of it with RCI....

Last year, I had a similar thing happen one time. I was searching for a resort. After I had manually searched, I happened to look at the account one more time, and found that my week was in an "ongoing search" for the same resort. I did not initiate that search. Thankfully, I found it right away and cancelled it.

Not to worry--that fake "search" that RCI initiates when you cancel a hold is just a ploy to keep your $164 in their account longer. They don't give the money back until you jump through more of their hoops.

Whenever I have released a hold online, an automatic ongoing search was placed

After you release your hold, you have to go into your Ongoing Searches and cancel the search, then you are also able to get your refund of the exchange fee. I'm not sure if they would have confirmed that exchange or not though.

They wouldn't have confirmed a general area search. The only time they might confirm is for resort-specific searches - and only after several days - and if they do that, you can cancel without penalty.
