Pros & cons changing to Florida residents.Worried about car insurance for 2 cars mostly. Not worried about no income tax in Fl.because I'm a retired NYS emp[loyee paying no state income tax.

I don't have the answer to this but I would think you may be able to cancel or suspend your car registration for six months each year ?

Unless of course you are taking the cars to Florida, and in that case you would keep them registered in the State in which you claim residency (i.e. New York).

My brother just did this and he registered his cars (previously registered in NY) in Florida and got Florida drivers licenses. He has a house in Florida he aims to have as his main residence and a house in NY he is trying to sell. He intends to maybe rent in NY a few months per year or buy an apartment for his snowbirding.

Lots of snowbirds use Florida as their main address. Especially ones who spend more time in Florida than other states. We are full time Florida residents, been for 32 years!

Pro: Disney discounts. Homestead RE tax exemption.
Con: If you meet the state criteria for a resident, you'll need a FL DL, and transfer title & register your car.

No matter what your politics are, your vote counts in Florida
Hmmmm, waiting in line to vote for two hours, after pools should be closed and national election results are already determined. One party getting 95 percent of vote in our district. It counts as a statistic, but not determining who wins.

Essentially, to qualify to be a Florida resident, you must spend at least half the year in Florida. Figure 183 days. You could buy a nice home for the price you get from selling your NY home, and for the 183 days you're not here, you can rent it out on VRBO or the like.

Check your car insurance coverages and where you need to plate them

Our neighbor is from NJ and for several years he plated in NJ as well as insured there but kept a car here
They only come down for 2 months and he recently found out that if his house burned down with the NJ car in it that he would not be covered since the car was here year round so he switched that car and it’s insurance to Florida
He also changes his bank and electric bills to Florida just before coming each year and is able to get Florida resident discount passes for the parks

Surprised he gets discounts at parks because they asked for photo id proving Florida residency.

A friend of mine owned a home in Hawaii and one here in New Mexico. Her husband kept a chart (as they went back and forth) to make sure they spent enough time in Hawaii as that is where they claimed residence.

I mentioned that to my insurance agent and she said not true. I was not able to get in to register my car and finally got an appointment

Or a statement with Florida address. Some residents are without ID as are undocumented or use a passport from another country.

Still surprised. They don’t honor a statement or even a tax bill in Wisconsin Dells to get into attractions. I remember having to show photo ID with Florida address to get discount At Disney. But they must have eased up.
