We're looking at Wapato Point in late March, and wondering if there are any ski resorts in the area (~45 minute drive) with a good chance of still being open....any advice would be appreciated.

Aloha,
We're not skiers, so cannot directly address the question.
2015 was a monster wild fire season due to severe drought that included lack of snow pack.
I have no faith in forecasts for 2016, but be mindful.
Here a link to a jpg http://motherboard-images.vice.com/content-images/contentimage/no-id/1440196069501712.jpg that shows the extent of some of the fires. You might want to compare that to a map of the ski areas near Wapato Point.
That jpg image location was taken from a web page with an inappropriate name on the following site http://motherboard.vice.com/ - search term washington forest fire should provide the page in case you want to read it

That late in the season will be entirely dependent on this Winter's weather patterns. El Nino is expected, which should amount to more precip. Whether it falls as snow or rain is the question. You might have to expand your target range further than 45 minutes. Don't pack yet.

Depends upon what kind of skiing you want to do.
North of Chelan/Wapato is Methow valley, which has great cross-country skiing. (I haven't been skiing there myself, but my x-country friends love it).
More likely to have skiing in Methow area or Mazama/Winthrop than down-hill skiing in Mission Ridge ski area outside of Wenatchee.

Wenatchee is south of Chelan, and Mission Ridge might have been hard hit last year from warm weather. Many ski areas in Washington were.
Bill4728 would have a better idea than most here on Tug.

Mission Ridge is the closest downhill resort. Definitely "iffy" as to whether it will be open. Depends on Mother Nature - particularly on the temperatures. Mission Ridge is about 90 minutes from Wapato Point, per Google Maps.

Stevens Pass is the next closest area - it's about two hours from Wapato Point. There is a much better chance of Stevens Pass being open than Mission Ridge. Stevens Pass can easily be combined with a trip to Leavenworth; for example stopping in Leavenworth on the way home for dinner and strolling around for a bit.

Thanks all for the advice. They'll probably want to do both dh and cc so I'll look to those resorts, as well as wandering Leavenworth.

If any of you have any interest in natural history you should go east into the coulees and scablands. Get a book that gives some history of the Spokane/Lake Missoula floods. If you have any bent at all for that type of stuff it is totally fascinating.

Dry Falls is about an hour from Chelan. Dry Falls was formed when a glacier from Canada blocked the Columbia River and forced it into a new channel. When active Dry Falls was bigger than Niagara Falls. From the lookout you can visualize what it must have been like.

But then when the Lake Missoula floods roared through, for one or two days the flow across the falls would be about 100 times as great. And you can see evidence of those massive flows as well, across the falls and down the coulee.

There is a very small ski area just south of Chelan; Echo Valley http://www.echovalley.org/. Very small and limited but if you want to ski rather than sit in the car, it might do the trick. I think March here would be iffy as well.
