I wish to book a short stay at a Category 6 Marriott for May 2009 which costs78,000 points, if I book it today. But I don't have enough points available to cover my stay, so the Marriott website simply says I need to earn the remaining points before my stay but it will let me book it today. Here's my question...today is says I need only 42,000 more points to cover the trip but by the time I earn those points, the cost for that Category 6 will have increased b/c of the new points system next year. Do you think they will honor me at the old points rate (78.000 total) b/c I'm booking today or will they expect me to earn extra points to accomodate the higher prices by next year?

This may be a question only Marriott can answer. You should call and ask. You can also purchase 50K points. This would work unless you have already done that this year. Though you could purchase more on January 1.

The current rate will be honored.

From one of the FAQs regarding the change:
I have a redemption reservation already booked but I haven’t ordered my certificate yet. Will I have to pay a different amount of points for the stay?

All redemption reservations booked on or before January 14, 2009, will be honored at the point price at which they were booked.
