Should I require ID to rent timeshare?

Just renting out my timeshare for the first time. I have emailed a rental agreement and invoiced through paypal. Asking for full payment since it's a little more than 30 days out. Should I require a copy of driver's license for proof that they are 25? I told the renter I will change the name on the reservation to their's and email it to them as soon as payment is received.

Why do they need to be 25? Most resorts are 21 including the one you have listed as your ownership.

I've never asked for ID although I do usually confirm their existence and address through other means.

Thanks for your response. One other question - I see in these sample rental agreements collecting security. That makes sense if you are renting your own property but my timeshare is a Marriott property and I would assume that since the resort has the renters credit card my collecting security is not needed.

I personally would remove the security deposit terms but your assumptions are not entirely correct. Technically you can still be held liable for damages caused by your renter and this is why some level of due diligence is prudent. You are the legal owner of the unit being occupied as long as it is not an exchange. It's being managed by someone else but it is still a legal owner occupation with certain rights far above that of a rental booking. Many Marriott timeshares do not require a credit card if an owner is checking in to their own reservation (unless they want to charge to the room). I am not certain if they require a credit card if an owner's guest checks in because Marriott never changes the reservation name to that of the guest. They just notate it in the notes.

Prepaying in full is a necessity for the owner but still burdensome enough on the renter. I check renters public records before I write up the rental agreement. I have not yet encountered a willing renter that I was not comfortable renting to.

I turned down two rentals in the last three days when I found out the ages of the parties. In one group, one was 21, five were 19 or 20. In the other, no one was 21. College kids on spring break.

The resort required $150 security deposit. Anything damages over that, the resort would probably come to me. So, I file suit and get a judgment. Judgments are easy. Try to collect from a college kid.

Asking for a scan of a driver's license is probably not a bad idea. If nothing else, it's a good way to get the street address that Wyndham wants.

I rented to a kid recently for the Sugar Bowl
he is on the staff of a Congressman. I considered turning him down because it is a Republican congressman he works for, but I let it go. No problems at all

As it turned out he was only 20 and no one in his group was 21. The resort say a thing, maybe because they didnt check and maybe because he was my guest,

Age isnt the factor for (and neither is politics) but There are plenty of 25 year olds that scare me and 70 year old too. Bottom line is I do a ton of rentals and have never had a damage problem

More likely the person checking him in did NOT check or look at his date of birth and then do the calculation to figure out his age ... photo id with name; name to credit card name; finally, name on Guest Certificate ... all matched and credit card approved. KEYCARD given up.

And as an aide to a Congressman (and a Republican one at that) ... most likely was clean cut and very proper ... well spoken and confident.
