A long week ago ... 10+ days ... I noticed a BOX (the size of LARGE toaster oven) with a weight label of 44lbs on my FRONT stoop. A UPS delivered package .. not to me but a neighbor down my street I do NOT personal know. But as I have 5 acres and he has over an acre also ... plus 100' plus setbacks off the road ... I ain't carrying his 44lb box over to his place ... UPS can't read my 6" tall reflective house numbers hammered on my door ... sham on them.

LAST SAT ... So I try to look up his house phone number on the internet ... call and leave a msg to come & get your package ... sitting on my front steps. I do have his name and address ... no big deal, right?

First Monday night -- last week. Package still there ... call UPS ... what a joke as they won't do anything til I get on my hands and knees on the front step and copy down their 18 digit tracking number and the intended target. Call again ... the agent notices via house numbers I am "just down the street" .. just take it over to HIM. I tell the "funny guy" it weights 44lb according to YOUR label and I am a senior citizen ... tell your MOTHER to move it a 1/4 of a mile. It aint't my job ... I am not on the UPS payroll ... you come and get it. He hangs up on me.

Tuesday .. call again and that agent said they will send out a pickup for tomorrow. On Wednesday. Leave porch light on --- so all the better to see the 44lb package ... to take it away.

Thursday ... AM ... package still there. Now, I get unhappy in a NJ way .... I call up UPS again ... again give them their 18 digit tracking number and tell them to COME and GET their package or it goes into the trash.

Monday (today) ... 1PM ... call UPS AGAIN. Get up to a 2nd level supervisor .... tell her, tomorrow is my TRASH DAY ... at 6AM this 44lb piece of crap will get loaded onto my hang truck and be placed down at the curb as TRASH ... the cardboard box has been out in the rain and weather, the label is ALMOST not read-able, I have called you all 4 times in the past 10 days. What is UPS's problem???? Next time ... I will forget all the "middle steps" and just drag it down to the curb within 10 minutes of noticing new trash on my front step.

The 1-800 US based lady has the local dispatcher call me back inside of 8 minutes ... promising me a driver is on his way to get this package ... Told her, heard that before ... and start with tomorrow at 6AM ... yes, she had been told by the 1-800 supervisor, I would be putting it in the trash at 6AM Tuesday. She was dispatching a truck to pick it up ... immediately.

Any bets?

Just to be neighborly, the next time I drove by the neighbor's place I'd stop in and let them know where they could pick their pkg. up. I wouldn't want to punish my neighbor for UPS's poor service. *Maybe it is something really important to them: a medical device, or a part for a broken down vehicle.

Good luck. I read recently that UPS underestimated holiday shipping demand and their on time delivery record is down in the low nineties from 97% average.

Cheers

On a related note: My husband's co-worker's wife is a mail carrier for USPS. Last Monday, three 20/30-something new hires walked in and saw the very large volume of mail and packages that they had to deliver that day, and quit on the spot. The walked out, and left behind a note that basically said "take this job and shove it."

Think about it - they quit good paying jobs, with benefits, job security, and a pension, because the Christmas season was going to be demanding for 3 weeks.

Federal law allows you to keep the merchandise sent to you in error if you have made reasonable attempts to return it.

Clearly, you have made reasonable attempts and given them ample time to pick up the delivery. I'd at least open it up prior to putting it on the curb if they don't come by to pick it up prior to your deadline. That way you can either keep it, donate it to a charity, or dump it to the curb.

As a precaution I would also keep a timeline of all of your correspondence with UPS.

Good luck.

This sounds like a good idea, but some of my neighbors are proud of their attack dogs and guns. I would not want to be punished for attempting to be neighborly.

My 5 foot chain link fence makes them "better neighbors" but they have strange behaviors ...
1) like pumping their pool water over the fence into my backyard.
2) both sides lawn care companies like my curb line to off load equipment & men .. running their powered equipment up & over my curb .. trash is found every so often (from their lunches).
3) seem their backyards cutting from their bushes ends up "blowing over my 5foot chain link fence MOST the of time.
4) I don't fit into their family and friends photo album ... no spouse, no kids, no labor day cook out, no white collar job, no illegal July 4th fireworks all night long.. plus their live household help was to park at least 3 car lengths off their property line .. older car (at least that help doesn't dump any trash).

I just find it best to keep my distance ... no good would come out of it ... IMHO. PS I am at least 15-20 years older than the neighbors.

I've got an issue with USPS. I pre-paid postage on one of those flat rate shipping boxes at home. I took it to the post office and dropped it in the parcel drop. This was Saturday, after hours, but I could hear workers in the building. So now it's Monday and the code is still showing that notification has been made to the post office that the package coming, but no progress has been shown, not even that it's been received. The mailman has been here and the package has not been returned. I wonder what's happened to it.

I am so glad I'm not your neighbor!

ETA: I just re-read my post, and I think it might be taken the wrong way! I was commenting on what a piece of work your neighbors sound like, and I'm glad I'm not their neighbor as well. Sorry if anyone took offence to my post!

Thanks for the clarification, PigsDad ...

I realized today I have the oldest house on the street .. the older homes had been torn down to build the standard 4bdr plus 2.5 baths with 2 car garage ... except for 2 homes where the garage space was "developed" into an 1 bdr apartment for the parents ... both occupied by a set of the grandparents.

So what had been 2 older homes .... there are now 22 bigger homes. Either I or my 90yo aunt owns the last "non-developed" land ... my 5 acres and her 15 acres which is farmed.

I was watching a news story the other day that UPS and Fedex are overwhelmed by the number of packages this year. Online ordering is way up and they simply can't keep up. You think they would have learned their lesson from prior holiday seasons. I would be more inclined to cut them some slack, they simply don't know one end from the other right now.

Maybe the same thing that happened to my iphone a few years ago being shipping to a friends house. Sign for with a signature remotely matching the name it was being shipped to. Att and Ups would not budge on sending a new one. The credit card company disputed and won the charge but I was locked into a contract for 2 more years without a new phone. Next time around ATT ended up sending me two iphones.

I ordered a number of items around the black Friday time. Some are still arriving. Deliveries are super slow this year. I don't doubt that everyone is understaffed and is dealing with rookie drivers and deliverymen.

If it were me, I'd find a way to notify the neighbor. I think it might be even more important since you don't have a good relationship with them. I wouldn't want the neighbor to find out that you trashed their delivery and take it out on you.

Do the right thing.

Some jobs are OVER WHELMING.....

Sometimes in the spirit of Christmas we need to give people the benefit of the doubt.....that things are tough and we shouldn't judge the situation without walking in their shoes.

Is the package really bothering you so much? Is it harming something on your property or so unsightly that you can't stand the distraction in your yard?

I think you've done a good job at calling and notifying people and trying to contact your neighbor (if you don't want to GO to your neighbors home because you fear some potential harm....maybe drop them a note in the mail, lol)

I also could put it on my hand truck and leave it at the end of their drive way at 6AM ...

I am sure those 35-40 year olds will enlighten UPS as to HOW MUCH THEY LIKE their great delivery ... middle of night at end of 100+ foot driveway.

This is what I would probably do. Wheel it over to their property and out it at the end of their driveway.

It's so infuriating that you contact the company- you try to do the right thing- and they could care less.

A similar thing happened to us a while ago. A huge box- a big toy for their kid. My husband was able to get it into the car and drive it to their house- we have a 700 foot driveway and their house is quite a ways down the road from us.

A few times I have actually had UPS or FedEX leave my items on our bridge (we have a bridge that goes over a stream as part of our driveway)-700 feet from our home. They have at times dropped it on the road by our mailbox- amazing it wasn't hit by a car or stolen. We would get home from work in the dark- barely could even see- the thing could have blown away - maybe fell into the water- or we could have maybe even run it over with our cars.

But most times, I have had nothing but good experiences with both UPS and FEDEX.

Sometimes they will put plastic over the boxes, but most times not. When I know I am expecting a package. I actually leave a large plastic bag outside with a note by my door to please cover the item in case of rain.

Did you say you were able to call your neighbor and tell them you have a package? I didn't understand...

This is by no means a slight to the OP, but it is sad that we now live in a world that we can't just stop by the neighbors if we need something or something like this happens. We don't really talk about our neighbors either, but we were mistakenly delivered a package that belonged to the people across the street. We were getting ready to head out for the evening and tossed it in the car and drove it over. I wish that I had just tossed it on the porch instead of knocking. It was all the woman could do to hold back their dog from trying to tear in to me.
