A CA visitor was bitten on his ankle this morning while snorkling in front of South, 40 yards. He is doing ok so far, and the beach was closed all day. There is a coast guard boat going back and forth to monitor. They will keep people out of the water tomorrow too. It did rain 2 days ago but the water seemed clear and was calm.

Yikes! We were there a few years ago when a man was killed by a shark while swimming. It was just a little ways down the beach so our beach was closed for the next 24 hours. I wasn't in a hurry to go back in after that.

Definitely scary, clearly wasnt an agressive attack or the victim wouldnt have been so fortunate. If we were desirable to sharks, we would be easy prey as we never see them before they attack.

Doesnt make it any less scary though..

This seems to happen every few years or so.

It seems to me that when a person decides to swim in waters where sharks live, they are accepting the chances of having a shark encounter. After all, it is the shark's home.

Have been here just long enough to be settled and think it was time to get in the ocean but I guess not!
My typical ocean swims include staying near people, safety in numbers, but with COVID its more of a challenge. Y ou need to consider how infrequently this happens though and how many people are enjoying the ocean . For a few days though I will stick to pools and maybe Napili Bay, which seems more sheltered. We are back at Hyatt for this week but the remainder of our stay is at Westin. Don't know if I can get myself to get back in there this trip.

Seems to be happening more often on Maui though. There was a death of a surfer somewhere near Slaughterhouse beach in Nov. and one a few yrs back near Kaanapali Beach Hotel.

More often on Maui compared to where?

Comparing Maui in the past to present. There was a death back in 2015, but then nothing that I'm aware of until 2019, when a visitor died near Kaanapali, then in Nov 2020, another death of a surfer, and then this incident. When you look at the big picture, we are pretty safe but it does get the fear activated

The attack in Honolua Bay was back in December, right before a women's surfing competition. I drove past the area and was wondering why there weren't any cars parked by the entrance. I heard what happened when I got back to KOR. Both incidents occurred at around 7:45 am.

The previous fatal attack was in 2019 by the Ka'anapali Shores Resort, just north of Nanea.

The beach was open this afternoon, but I didn't see many people swimming.

There have been far more fatalities on the roads of Maui in that time period. There have also been more drownings. Hawaii has averaged 82 drownings/year over the last 5 years. Fortunately, sharks don't hang around after these incidents. These things happen now and then. I'll be in the water tomorrow.

How many people died in car accidents in Maui from 2015-2020?

I was free diving in front of building 5 when that occurred. A Maui coast guard on a jet ski ordered me out of the water. Was pretty scary...and sad for the lady that lost her husband.

My daughter was swimming on front of Nanea when a jetski pulled up and 'suggested' that they stay out of the water. .. .. SUGGESTED?? needless to say, we went to Lahaina.. lol

A friend of mine says that sharks are pretty territorial so they will return to these waters.
