This is an old picture, but it's what my dad's back yard looked like in the spring. He kept busy gardening until he got a blood disease in his early 80's.

What a gorgeous home and property you have!!

None of those photos are of our property. I wrote at the bottom of the post that I was taking photos as I walked. But Charleston is gorgeous, especially this time of year.

Panina and Glynda I get sooo jealous of the extended season ya'll have when I visit the community garden on HHI. That is one of my "go to" destinations while we bike ride. Right across the street from the horse barn. They've got it made.

We got home Monday night. Yesterday was the first wave of action in the yard. Pulled bags of chickweed and garlic mustard. I should be cooking and canning the garlic mustard in case the pandemic gets ugly enough to cause serious food shortages. I've watched lots of WWI and WWII documentaries and read lots of WWII books. Years ago, as a joke I bought a cookbook for it.

Raining today but we got to come home to a second spring. Trillium full bloom, bleeding hearts, wild geranium, crabapples, the excitement of new fresh growth coming out of the ground.

My neighbor just sent me this garden tour on YouTube. Not my yard but my State. We love Mackinac Island.

You’ll see some very functional veggie boxes. The island has varmits that can devastate a veggie garden. Back by the carriage barn you’ll see the veggie boxes are wire enclosed.

I have backyard envy now.

Nah it's not that bad :) Do you have irrigation for the boxes? thought I saw some. My husband had put in his own underground sprinkler system in each of the last 2 houses we've owned. My garden has an irrigation system as well. So much rain this spring haven't needed to use it but a couple times.

Yes, there is a home made irrigation system. Soaker hoses attached to PVC pipes, all tied to a timer, hooked to an external faucet. All you have to do is set it, balance each individual pot once a year, and fertilize occasionally. (And make certain the valve doesn't fail. That happened last year. )

As far as vegetable gardening, all I have is this. Don't want to spend the time for more right now. growing carrots, onions, snow peas, tomatoes (those 2 plants will yield several hundred yellow ones), green beans (very late at planting this year), spinach, radishes. With my upcoming surgery, I need to spend my time painting the black background structure (solar/picnic pavilion). Will be a hassle, up and down ladder. Black paint is wearing off. I like seating as I get older, a lot easier than ground level.

Today we worked in the yard. Trimming bushes that were shading some of the Peonies. We actually have 3 different types of Peonies in our yard. The previous picture was of one of our tree peonys. We actually have 2. They are both about 15 years old. The flowers tend to be almost dinner plate size. They tend to have brittle branches that break easily so we have to brace almost every branch that has a flower.

The next picture is a Yellow Itoh Peony. It is a specially developed hybrid. It is more like a Bush. We have 2 Itohs. Then other will not blossom for several years. Unfortunately we had to move it twice last summer. We are happy it survived.

The next set of pictures are various Herbacious Peonies of different styles and colors.

It will take weeks for us to get around the entire yard for Spring cleanup. It’s hard to be patient as my mind wants the current beauty to be surrounded by total tidiness. The only way that can happen is to get a crew. That’s not happening this year.

So here are some vignettes. The property is full of wild geraniums and bleeding hearts that have gone wild.

I have no backyard but I am growing indoor plants hydroponically. These pictures are of lettuce and herbs which I started about 2 weeks ago. On another 2 larger systems which I started a week ago have 3 kinds of tomatoes, bell pepper, jalapeno and Thai chili pepper. Not much to show on these yet.

My little raised bed was doing so well, and then the cabbage loopers/inch worms showed up in the lettuce. I think the lettuce is a gonner (plus it's too hot for lettuce) but everything else is hanging in there. We put a sun shade up today because it's suppose to be 102 today.
