Can’t “like” this, but thanks for posting. My dd lives there in Silicon Valley.

I am now in a quandry. Our daughter is in college in LA finishing up finals this week. The plan was to drive down and bring her home this sat for spring break so she wouldn't have to fly through LAX. Now with all of the shelters in place and LA potentially being locked down, I am worried I won't be able to travel to get her. I offered to drive down from the Bay Area to get her today (6 hours) because all of her roomates have gone home. She can take her finals and spring classes remotely. She says "not concerned" and doesn't want to sit in the car for so long before finals. She still goes out to meetings in the community so the longer she is there the more likely she will get exposed and bring it home. She would be all alone in her apt. if she becomes ill. She said she has friends still in town but I wonder if they would truly help her out if she becomes ill. Hoping I can convince her.

Sounds like getting her home today is best due to all of the uncertainty with Shelter in Place and other possible lock downs.

What exactly does this mean? Can you go to a grocery store or a doctors appt?

IMHO, this is the proper/correct move by the city to control the spread of the Coronavirus.

It gets worse...my dd says she’s down to her last roll of toilet paper and hasn’t been able to find any more. Cue the mother making a trip to the post office tomorrow.

DD decided to stay in LA. She has friends in the area and she is concerned about unknowingly passing along to us. We will stay in frequent contact. Same with our son who lives in a state with many fewer cases.

She's probably right. It's the mama bear in me that wants them all home and safe. But perhaps they are safer where they are.

BTW...we received a mass notification of the shelter in place alert on our phones. Did anyone else get one?

Mine too. I talked to her today. They had just gotten the notice around 1 p.m. She didn't know whether to stay at work or leave. She was going to wait until she heard something from her boss.

Well **** . I have plans to feed 44 public servants tomorrow and $350 dollars worth of corned beef I am not wasting.
Based on the location I feel pretty safe I won’t get arrested:cool:

As a side note my 78 yo mother in SoCal is down to 1 roll of toilet paper. Shame on every single nasty hoarder that has cleaned out every store for weeks!

Ours plans to go home in 10 days may need to be cancelled. Wonder if OAK will shut down. Not sure if flying is in the cards. I hate that drive not sure what we will do..... ****,****,****.

I hope the post offices will be open. I need to mail our tax info to our accountant. I am sure the government would consider paying taxes "essential." ;)

We explained to our college son that he could stay at his apartment near campus (while school was out) or he could come home.......however, if he chose to come home he would be choosing to go into social isolation with us (we are over 65 with health conditions; we have been isolating ourselves since the beginning of March at our daughter's home in FL - she has committed to locking down with us & it's worked out so nicely spending this time together....walks, biking, hiking some nature trails, working in the yard, swimming & enjoying the babies - we do all our shopping on line and drive over to pick up & she orders Hello Fresh meals). My son would need to quit his part time job near our house & basically give up socializing to truly isolate with us (he has to start his isolation now....so that when we get home in two weeks we should all be pretty good. His decision was SURE.....he looks forward to seeing us. I hope it's the right decision for all of us.

There are other ways to solve this problem .

*****
here is one option - as a teenager / 50 + years ago - my wife babysat for a family who had a rule -
4 squares per bathroom visit .

I think they had been through WW II in occupied Europe / or were just extremely frugal .
Anyway each roll lasted a long time .

I am in San Jose, CA. My dentist cancelled my appt which was this upcoming Thursday. Only banks (??? why?), grocery stores (costco included, I hope???) and gas stations will be allowed to open. I hear they will start shutting down highways soon. I work in healthcare and hospitals are cancelling all "noncritical surgeries". I personally think this is all in good measure, let's get this done now so that we can get back on with our lives STAT! Anyway, just my 2 cents...

No highway shut downs as of now (I know for a fact the 880 is open) people have to get to and from work.

Big brother moment...I have a SoCal area code cell phone but just got an alert from Contra Costa Health Services:

We are SoCal. So far we are practicing self isolation. Bars and restaurants are closed. Even Starbucks have removed all of its tables and chairs to remind ppl, take out only. I have joined a local FB page to help me find last minute groceries and other supplies if needed. Most local grocery stores in our area will begin delivery upcoming Saturday.
