I may try selling, if not successful may consider donating. I am an owner [of a timeshare] now managed by DRI. First of all - is Bidshares really Free ? I may try that first but if not successful may follow what a previous owner from Pelican suggested. He indicated that he took a charitable deduction for 4900 for his unit. My question - how does one determine a value ? Any suggestions from folks that have been down this road ? I am truly unhappy with DRI philosophy, so hope to part ways asap ..... :whoopie:

The market value is what you could actually sell it for - and you will need current comps for the exact same unit as documentation. But first of all, you need to find someone who will accept a donation, and in this economy, that's not easy. Non-profits will only accept donations of timeshares that they feel that they can quickly sell for a profit. See the "How To Sell Your Timeshare" article at the top of the page for info. about donating.

If you really just want to get rid of it, an alternative would be to give it away and one place you can do that for free is the TUG Timeshare Marketplace linked at the top of the page. List your week for $1 and it will automatically go on the Bargain Basement Page. Specify that the new owner pays all transfer costs.

Yes, Bidshares is really free and I've used it for rentals, but without much success. You might do well with an auction for $1, I don't know.

What ever you do, don't pay someone a large upfront fee to sell it - that's almost always a scam.

JRS - try using the search function (Search this forum) and try searching for "donation" and "donating" - there are probably some posts that would interest you. I can't post a link to a search, or I'd do it for you.

Did you see the info. about donating in the "How to Sell Your Timeshare" article at the top of the board?

Yes, I have actually been a member for many more years than the system indicates. [Deleted sentence regarding timeshare to be sold. - Dave M] I will follow up with your suggestion - Thanks

Denise M:

I noticed you have this link as part of all your responses, but deleted the "name" of the resort which I referred to - because it could be constued as advertising. Shouldn't you delete that link which is attached to all your responses - for the same reason ?? I mean fair is fair - right ?

Timeshare donations..

You can also find info about some charities that accept timeshares here..
http://www.timeshareforums.com/foru...ting-your-timeshare-charity-did-work-you.html

Looks like you need to be very careful with how much you claim when you donate the property- as a second tax form is filed by the charity- and if you claim more than it sold for- you could be subject to both the underpaid taxes and penalties..

Good luck!

JRS -

As "a member for many more years than the system indicates", you probably know most of the following, but since you asked the question....

Posting an interest in selling or renting a timeshare is treated as advertising if the poster identifies the resort and/or other details that might induce others who read the post to contact the poster and make an offer.

The same applies to any commercial links or comments where the poster has something to gain. Thus, if I owned the XYZ Travel Agency, I would not be permitted to include a link that refers to the site in my posts, nor could I mention that I run that business. Doing so would be treated as advertising, because, as specified in the Posting Rules, I'm not permitted to include anything in my post that would be considered a "promotion for [my] business".

That's much different than Denise's link, which is to her personal web site and which, in the link, there is no reference to any commercial activity. Many, many TUGgers include such a link to their personal sites in posts. See the Posting Rules for methodology permitted for linking to commercial sites!

The details are outlined in the "Advertising" section of the Posting Rules, which you can access from the blue bar near the top of this page.

Also, if you have further comments about moderating, please follow this part of the Posting Rules:
In addition, do not enter complaints about moderation into BBS messages. .... Any such complaints or discussion should be communicated to the BBS staff directly via email or personal message.
