I am considering a Timeshare resale purchase on Hilton Head Island. I have narrowed it down to HGVC Ocean Oak or Marriott Grande Ocean. In your opinion, which is a better choice concerning the two actual resorts themselves, as well as the TS companies in how they treat resale owners? Thank you.

Hilton treats resale a lot better by allowing all owners retail and resale to enroll into their points program, whereas with Marriott, you'd have to either buy DC points and pay the "education" fee or requalify into the points program.

From what I understand, Ocean Oak is one of the properties that the developer (not HGV) is pretty heavily exercising ROFR on resale weeks. So that may be something to consider. ROFR.net shows a lot of them failing. You may have better luck getting a Grande Ocean week through MVC.

You have narrowed your choices to two great resorts. I own only Grande Ocean weeks. Since the resorts are so close I was curious about Ocean Oak so a couple of years ago, I walked into Ocean Oak from the beach and looked around. I only saw the outside of the buildings. Grande Ocean has more landscaped community space and a larger campus. I prefer the space and landscaping at Grande Ocean. Ocean Oak expanded the number of units a few years ago and put more units in the same space. Grande Ocean provides a free car & bike pass into Sea Pines. I have read here on tug that you could not bring an outside bike into Sea Pines without a pass. And you could not buy a bicycle pass at tte gate. Car passes were $9 per day last time I heard. If you have not stayed in either or both, that would be my recommended next step.

If you are actually going to use the week you are purchasing you can't go wrong with either. Both are great resorts.

Hilton easily is the better system in terms of treatment of resale owners- in so far as being allowed into their points system ( Marriott does not allow you into their point system as a resale owner unless you go through an expensive process of buying another week(s) or points from them) --but if your buying in Hilton Head you should probably be planning to use the unit you buy anyway

Both are first rate resorts. I prefer Grande Ocean

You might "try before you buy " and rent at both first

I just stayed a week at Ocean Oak and had a great time. The resort is beautiful and the staff were very friendly.

The only negative about Ocean Oak that I saw was that it has two very small condo unit very close to it and they can be an eye sore.
